On the article Do You Own a Hybrid? Would You Buy a Hybrid?

ReplyI have owned a Prius for 3 years, and would buy another one in the future (about 7 years from now). Its great on gas. I go 3 weeks between fill-ups, and the fill-ups usually cost between $15 & $20. The price of gas has risen a lot since I bought it, so the payback time in terms of the extra up-front costs is shorter than I calculated. Plus the reduced gas consulmption is better for the environment. Final factor in decision: its a cool car.

ReplyIf there are more businesses that attract shoppers, will parking for non-residents of the building be a problem? A large number of parking spaces in the municipal garage are reserved for commuters with stickers. I recently had to give up going to lunch on Main St. because there were no spaces. Cars were circling in the garage hoping one would become available. Could some of the commuter spaces in the municipal garage be designated for non-sticker parking on weekends?

On the article Deal on Fernald Center in Waltham a Possibility, Officials Say

ReplyThere is a large amount of contamination on the site. About 50% of the 71 buildings still contain asbestos. There is a large area where above-ground asbestos-covered steam pipes crumbled over the years. They are encapsulated now, but the ground is contaminated with asbestos. In addition, there is a lot of contamination in and around the power plant. The clean-up could cost as much as $10+ million. So any deal would have to take that amount off the top of the "fair market" value, or require the state to clean it up first. Also, the price should be based upon conservation/recreation zoning.

On the article Sidewalk Snow-Clearing Requirement Proposed for Waltham

ReplyI agree with the Newton law that exempts elderly and handicapped persons. But there are a lot of people in this category in our city, and I don't think the city is prepared to clear these persons' sidwalks. In fact, the city did not clear the sidewalks in front of its own property on Trapleo Rd. until two weeks after the big storm, and until I complained. Thank you to George Darcy for taking care of it.

ReplyPeople do walk on Trapelo Road all the time. But with unplowed sidwalks for long stretches of the road, they have to drive cars, stay home or risk being hit by cars. I saw a pedestrian trying to cross Beaver Street at Forest Street. The walk button had been plowed in. She had to dodge traffic to get across the street.

ReplyThe city has not cleared the sidewalks in front of its own proprerty on Trapelo Road, including the Lawrence School (home of the school maintenance department), and the Mackerel Hill park area. Clearly the priorities should be near schools first, but after that the sidwalks in front of other city properties should be plowed.
2 feet of snow is onerous for elderly and disabled residents. The city should plow the busiest and most dangerous roads for pedestrians, like Trapelo Rd, Waverley Oaks Rd, Forest St., and Beaver St. to mention a few. Pedestrians really risk their lives if they walk on these roads. The side roads are less of problem.

ReplyTrapelo Road is great - down to bare pavement. Beaver Street near Bentley is not good. It could use some more plowing. There will probably be a huge traffic jam tomorrow, so leave early!

On the article What Do You Think About Gov. Patrick’s Travel Ban?

The ban was reasonable. There were no scenes of abandoned cars on the highways. Most people got home OK.

The classification of all employment into 3 categories is too broad, and the term "creative" for many white-color bureaucrats is a misnomer. Also, most Waltham neighborhoods are nearly equally divided between creative class and service class. Yet a slight edge in one direction colors the whole neighborhood either purple or red.
