Donation Opportunities in Wake of Marlborough Fire

Several organizations and the Marlborough city government have established means of relief for those displaced by the Lake Williams fire.

Dozens if not hundreds of residents around the Marlborough community have responded to the disastrous Lake Williams condo fire with sympathy and compassion in the days since the blaze, all the time asking what they could do to help those affected.  During that time, many local organizations have come forward to coordinate relief efforts, and the city of Marlborough has established an avenue for monetary donations that would benefit the victims of the fire.  Just a day after the fire, Furnishing Options, a local nonprofit, put forth an urgent plea to those in the Metrowest area asking for items such as bed linens, dressers and bureaus, kitchen and dining room tables as well as chairs and kitchenware (including posts and pans). Anyone who …

Fire Marshal: Cause of Marlborough Fire is Inconclusive

Officials say the area where the fire began is too far gone to determine a cause.

State and local fire officials have not been able to determine a cause for the fire that destroyed the Lake Williams Condominiums on West Main Street in Marlborough.  State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan and Marlborough Fire Chief James Fortin issued a joint statement Wednesday saying the cause of the fire that began in an attic storage space could not be determined due of the extent of the damage.  Officials also said that there was no evidence that the fire was one of a suspicious nature.  “The very area where investigators believe the fire started, the attic, has been completely burned away,” said Fortin in the statement. There were no injuries in the fire, though several were sent to the hospital as a precautionary measure. However, a …

Pets Killed in West Main Street Fire, Five People Sent to Hospital

The human toll in Monday's West Main Street fire in Marlborough was slim, but several residents lost their pets to the out of control blaze.

Mayor Arthur Vigeant's office reported late Monday that though there were no human casualties in the six-alarm fire on West Main Street, several pets were killed.  The one tenant hospitalization was due to a cat owner becoming distraught after realizing his pets were trapped in the burning building, said fire chief James Fortin and the mayor's office. "There were no human casualties, though several pets were lost," said a release from Vigeant's office. "There are also no life-threatening injuries being reported for either residents or emergency personnel, although four firefighters were transported to the hospital for what were expected to be minor injuries." Vigeant praised the efforts of the Marlborough Fire Department for their quick …

Knowing Tenant Rights in the Wake of the Marlborough Fire

There is a Massachusetts state law that protects tenants displaced by fire.

More than 40 apartments were completely destroyed by fire, smoke and water in Marlborough on Monday, and other neighboring buildings had to be evacuated due to smoke damage. All told, more than 60 condos were empty Monday evening due to the damage.  The Red Cross has set up at the Marlborough Senior Center to help those that have been displaced, but all renters should be aware of their rights after such a devastating event.  Those who owned their units inside the Lake Williams Condominiums should be protected by their homeowners insurance, but what happens if you were a renter? "Every policy which insures multi-unit residential property against loss or damage by fire shall provide additional benefits, by endorsement attached to the policy…

I recently had a fire and was displaced in Spencer, Ma., along with four other families. I cannot believe the disparity that exists monetarily between tenants who are given the minimum $750 "relocation" insurance covered by Landlord's policy as opposed to those who were smart enough to carry "renter's insurance", which pays $30k, $40k, $50k depending on policy, & many other benefits costing …   more ›

Displaced Residents Get Red Cross Aid, Fire Investigation Begins

The Marlborough fire that destroyed approximately 40 condominium units on West Main Street Monday morning is still being extinguished, while residents start to receive aid. The possible establishment of an overnight shelter is being considered.

As the flames of an enormous, six alarm fire were quelled by dozens of firefighters from around Metrowest Monday afternoon, the former residents of 271 West Main St. and several neighboring buildings were left wondering where they were going to live.  Most got out of their units at the Lake Williams Condominiums with just the clothes on their backs, and had to watch from the sidewalk as flames consumed the top floor of the building, and thousands of gallons of water were dumped on the building, destroying just about everything else.  While state fire marshals investigated the scene and spoke with residents as to a possible cause for the fire, Red Cross officials were busy preparing the Marlborough Senior Center to receive those that had …
