Sean Collier, 26, was killed on Thursday night in a shooting at MIT, allegedly by the suspects in Monday's Boston Marathon bombings.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer shot and killed Thursday night has been identified as Sean Collier of Somerville, a 26-year-old who has strong Wilmington ties. According to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, Collier worked for MIT Police since January 2012 and was previously a civilian employee for the Somerville Police Department. Police said that at 10:20 p.m. on Thursday night, they received a report of shots fired on the MIT campus in Cambridge. About 10 minutes later, Collier was found shot in his vehicle near Vassar and Main Street. The November shooting of Bryce Coutinho by Marlborough Police Officer Soren Levenson has been deemed justifiable by the Middlesex District Attorney's office. The department's investigation concluded that Coutinho, who had assault and battery charges pending with the Marlborough Police Department, got within 5 or 6 feet of the officer while holding a knife in an aggresive manner. The Marlborough Police Officer whose actions were being investigated following a police-involved shooting has returned to active duty.
Marlborough Police Officer Soren Levenson, who has been on paid administrative leave since the fatal shooting of Bryce Coutinho in November, returned to active duty last week, according to police officials. Levenson was placed on leave, following standard protocol, during an investigation by multiple agencies of the fatal November 12 shooting. The findings that the shooting was justifiable was announced yesterday by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office. The decision to have Levenson return to active duty was a combination of a number of factors, including his well-being, said police officials. The investigation into last November's police-involved shooting continues.
The investigation into the fatal shooting of Bryce Coutinho by a Marlborough Police officer is still underway, according to officials from the Middlesex District Attorney's Office. The investigation continues with the district attorney, said MaryBeth Long from the attorney's office. The officer involved remains on paid administrative leave following normal procedures. The investigation began after the fatal shooting on November 12. It has been reported that Coutinho had a knife on him at the time of the shooting. According to court documents, Coutinho had assault and battery charges pending against him from an incident the previous month in which he had also allegedly jumped in front of a car in a suicide attempt.
