Marlborough Woman Turns to Volunteering After Getting Laid Off

Furnishing Options director Diane Ring profiles volunteer Kerry Higgins, and talks to her about what makes her tick.

Kerry Higgins first started volunteering with Furnishing Options two years ago. Since then, she has come to love helping out this program and really believes in its mission. Furnishing Options, which is run by Employment Options, a Marlborough-based agency, collects furniture, linens and household goods in good condition that people aren’t using and gives those items to people in need. As Higgins explains, when she first got on her own, “it was all hand-me-down furniture” and she sees her participation in this program as a way of paying it forward. Employment Options helps people who have experienced challenges in life and are on the road to recovery. Having a place to call home and an independent lifestyle is a huge step in this process …

Q&A: Marlborough Man Donates Time and Talents Through Volunteering

Marlborough is filled with people who make it priority to donate their time. Here is our conversation with one of them, Paul Bishop.

Marlborough Patch asked resident, family man, Patch contributor and volunteer Paul Bishop to share with us during this season of giving.  Tell us about you and your family.  My wife Karen is from Milford, but I grew up in rural Wisconsin, the adopted son of a Navy man and a teacher. Tragically both died in a gas explosion in our home when I was fifteen, with myself and two siblings being taken in by my aunt and uncle. I decided there were many memories that were best left behind, and after a half-hearted few years of college, I made the grand adventure of loading my belongings in a pickup and driving East. I ended up in Framingham, and eventually met the intriguing and beautiful woman that I made my wife. We met and married after I came to…

Mr Bishop doesn't even touch on the fact that he volunteered for many years with the Red Cross Disaster Team before he got sick. He is someone who is very giving of his time and will help anyone, even when he's not feeling his best.   more ›

Raising Marlborough: A Local Education

Embedding Values in Your Children

This week Sue Wambolt talks about embedding values that provide a roadmap to a happy, well-balanced Life.

If you believe what you profess to believe ... live it  Perhaps one of the greatest responsibilities that comes with being a parent is the molding of another life. Specifically, the nurturing, educating and guiding of our children towards a full and productive life. As parents, it is our job to lay the foundation of our children’s future and, in doing so, cultivate the essential values necessary to create a meaningful and fulfilling life. As generations melt into one another, emerging trends continually challenge us and transform us in ways we never thought possible. Still, there remains one constant which is threaded through all generations and that is underlying social and moral values. As parents, embedding core values in our children …
