Here's what's open and closed for today's holiday.
Today we observe Veterans Day, a national holiday established in 1926 to honor men and women who have served in the military. Here's a quick round-up of what's open and closed in Marlborough today. If you know of more businesses that are open or closed, help out your fellow neighbors by leaving them in the comments.
As the country observes Veterans Day today, let's share stories and thoughts about the veterans in our lives.
Veterans Day, which marks the anniversary of the end of World War I, honors all veterans, alive and dead. Maybe you have today off from work. Maybe you don't. Either way, we encourage you to take a few moments to help us honor local veterans. Marlborough Patch, as a meeting place for community information and conversation, has a blogging platform that we'd love to see filled today and this week with stories about or tributes to the veteran(s) in your lives. To share a story about a veteran in our local voices section, click here. Or, add a comment to the end of this article. I used our blogging platform last month to pay tribute to my 89-year-old grandfather, Armand Descoteau: a World War II veteran who recently received France's highest …

More than 30 students from the Advanced Math and Science Academy learned about the importance of Veterans Day this past week.
As a child it may be difficult to grasp the gravity of holidays such as the one we've just had, but a teacher at the Advanced Math and Science Academy hopes to impart some of that importance to his students. "After a classroom discussion about Veterans Day, many students at AMSA expressed an interest in getting actively involved and show their appreciation to local veterans in Marlborough," said AMSA teacher Mark Vital. "I encouraged them to remember the true meaning of the holiday and to set time aside for this special day." As part of the curriculum, students learned how to format a personal letter and wrote a sincere thank you note to veterans they personally knew. In addition to their thank you letters, students wrote notes on large …

Freedom Is Not Free ~ Thank you Veterans 11-11-11
If you know a veteran or active military personnel, we would be honored to know. Add their name, rank and years of service in the comment box so we can acknowledge and give thanks to those who sacrifice and have sacrificed for our freedom. In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In …
