Local Businesses and City Weather the Storm

Local businesses and the city of Marlborough weathered Hurricane Sandy with their heads high and doors (mostly) open.

While the city lay mostly silent Monday as schools, government buildings and even businesses shuttered their doors, everything is back and running in Marlborough. Many restaurants shuttered their doors Monday, but the Main Street Cafe kept theirs open. When the power goes out and when the storm is bearing down on the city, people need a place to go for a warm meal, said owners Mary and Randy Scott. Although they may have battened down the hatches during the storm, local businesses are back up and running. Included among their numbers are  Jake's and the Coffee Loft. The city is back up and running today as well. With the schools having been closed for two days, children are now back in school and thanks to a decision by the city with …

At Annie's, Second Time is the Charm

Annie's Book Swap has been selling and trading books in Marlborough for more than 30 years.

Annie's Book Swap has stacks and stacks of just about every paperback book you can imagine: there are romance, mystery, suspense, classic and children/young adult titles galore. "A lot of people picture garages and basements when they hear 'used book store'," said owner Linda Neill. At Annie's, the books are gently used and arranged neatly on the shelves. "All of the books are in alphabetical order by author and easy to find," Neill said. "Of course, the regulars know exactly what they're looking for. We have a lot of regular customers." Neill has owned the Marlborough location for four years, but had worked for the previous owner for 10 years prior to that. A book lover, she made the career change after working for a long time in a …

Q&A: Marlborough Woman Supports Cancer Research with Photos for Cures

This local photographer donates her time and talents to raise money for children's cancer research.

Kim Rosen is a Marlborough resident and photographer who spends her spare time raising money for cancer research at St. Jude Children's Hospital with a nonprofit business called Photos for Cures. Marlborough Patch asked her some questions this week about what makes her tick. In anticipation of Small Business Saturday (Nov. 26), think about using this local service that benefits a life-saving cause.  Tell us about Photos for Cures. How did you get the idea? I founded photos for cures on May 24, 2010 the day a friend lost her three-year-old son to cancer. I combined my love for photography with my love of raising money and awareness for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. My mother was actually the one who suggested raising money this way…

Q&A: The Dirtiest Car and How it Was Cleaned

Patch got the dirty details from the Marlborough Clean and Green Car Wash and got the details on some upcoming deep discounts.

Patch asked Clean and Green Car Wash owner Kevin Labadini what makes his business tick in anticipation of the upcoming Small Business Saturday following Thanksgiving. Right now, if you "Like" on them on Facebook you will receive a one time $4 discount off any car wash. Patch: Why did you want to open a car wash? Labadini: I have always had a passion for cars and I though what a great way to incorporate what I love into a business. Patch: Tell us about the name. Why are you guys "green"? Labadini: Green means eco-friendly, keeping the earth and the environment in mind. It's our theme, to clean cars with earth friendly chemicals, we recycle our water with a state of the art water raclaim system, we even have recycle bins for customers to …

Restaurant Reporter

OPINION: Comfort Food at Bumpy's

Bumpy's diner cuisine and warm atmosphere creates a great place to relax with friends and family.

Bumpy’s Restaurant, also known as Main Street Café, is located in the epicenter of Marlborough. Vinyl booths and counter service give the restaurant more of a diner than café atmosphere. Multiple tables provide ample space for larger groups to descend on the location. Although one would not want to travel great distances to dine here, the comfort diner cuisine combined with the friendly staff creates a setting conducive to passing a lazy afternoon catching up and relaxing with old friends. When entering the establishment, be sure to look over the rotating specials located on a board by the front door. The homemade turkey soup tastes as if made by a favorite relative. Large chunks of tender turkey crowd the bowl. But beware that at Bumpy’s…
