Restaurant News: Breakfast Beer, BBQ and Burgers

We post a roundup of restaurant openings and closings in the area.

Have you noticed a new restaurant while driving around the MetroWest area recently? We know you don't just stay in town when you want to eat out so here is a round-up of restaurant news around the area. Milford Selectmen Roll Back Hours at Scioli's, and impose temporary alcohol license suspension. Milford Selectmen ordered a six-month rollback on alcohol serving hours for Scioli's Pizza Bar. The rollback on serving hours, to 11 p.m. daily, follows a court decision that affirmed the town's decision to curtail alcohol sales at the bar and restaurant. Selectmen voted to approve the hours rollback after a hearing in which police and customers described a fight in the parking lot that seriously injured two customers.  In a related action, …

Allora Chef Balances Cooking, Community Outreach

In addition to preparing meals from scratch, the Marlborough restaurant's chef spends time teaching kids about nutrition.

Jameson Mello has been in the restaurant business for as long as he can remember. Mello, who grew up in nearby Leominster, has been the chef at Allora Ristorante since the establishment opened in June 2007. The restaurant specializes in Italian and Mediterranean dishes. "We sell a lot of seafood: more so than many other Italian restaurants," Mello said, attributing the possible reason for this to the fact that Allora's Lake Williams waterfront location gives a feeling of being at the shore. "Our most popular dish is the stuffed salmon. The pan-seared sea scallops are also a big seller." The recently remodeled restaurant has 150 seats including a function room, lounge, bar and another 100 seats on its outdoor patio, open during the warmer …

OPINION: Quality Chinese Food at Low Prices

Swing by Panda House for a meal that won't break the bank.

Lying at the edge of Main Street in the heart of downtown Marlborough is one of those much sought after, yet often hard to find restaurant mirages: Quality and cheap Chinese food. Panda House is a family run and operated restaurant that serves up large and steaming dishes of Mandarin, Szechuan and Hunan cuisine. Because the restaurant boasts just five tables, most patrons order their food "to go." Begin your meal with an order of hearty steamed dumplings, which are a slightly more healthy option than their fried counterparts. The dumplings were also more desirable than their traditional egg rolls, which turned out to be rather uninspiring. For lunch, Panda House offers 22 combos on their lunch special menu, all of which are under $6 and …

OPINION: Celebrate the Fall with Pumpkin Ice Cream

Visit Westside Scoops for delicious Gifford's Ice Cream.

Apple picking season is upon us. Halloween candy already fills the aisles of local stores. Temperatures are slowly creeping down the thermometer. The kids are back in school. Fall has finally arrived, and we must embrace the last warm days of the year. Nothing compliments sunshine and warmth better than ice cream. Treat yourself and friends and family to some decadent ice cream from Westside Scoops. Choose from nearly 20 flavors, including lobster tracks (not made from actual lobster) and raspberry sorbet. And don't forget to try their seasonal pumpkin ice cream, which one guest noted as the best pumpkin ice cream he had ever tried. The staff will serve heaping scoops of Gifford's Ice Cream (shipped from Maine) onto fresh, homemade …

OPINION: New Eatery Opens in Marlborough

Swing by Brauna Pizza to try their delicious subs and welcome them to the community.

There are two reasons why most folks probably have never heard of Brauna Pizza. The small eatery is tucked away in a tiny nondescript plaza on Boston Post Road West. Also, Brauna just opened its doors to the Marlborough community only two months ago. However, there are many reasons why residents should try this hidden gem. If craving pizza, it could take months to eat your way through the 25 varieties of gourmet pizzas offered. And that does not even include traditional pizza options such as pepperoni, cheese or mushroom. While waiting on the main course, order a round of garlic bread, but be prepared. Rather than receiving a few small pieces of bread, what can only be a whole loaf of bread is served covered in melted butter and fresh …

Buffalo Chicken that Can't Be Beat at Kennedy's

Kennedy's Pub on Maple Street offers a wide variety of delicious meals and drinks.

Kennedy's Pub has been home to family dining and good eating in Marlborough for a long time.  Kennedy's started as a family business in 1981 and has grown to become a local landmark over the years. The restaurant is hidden behind Kennedy's Market at 247 Maple St. Its aged, dark, wood accented interior is similar to what one might expect to find inside a country pub on the back-roads of rural Ireland, but with its own flair of fare, it is decidedly not Irish in the traditional sense. Kennedy's menu fits more easily inside the confines of continental cuisine. First off, I must commend the buffalo chicken strips. While this item is only on the appetizer list, Kennedy's serves a healthy portion of some of the most delicious chicken I have ever…

OPINION: Large Portions at Chez Siam

For a relaxed atmoshpere and a variety of Thai dishes, visit Chez Siam.

The menu at Chez Siam reflects the cuisine of most Thai restaurants, offering a range of curry and pad Thai dishes, along with a generous variety of tofu dishes. The restaurant is small with limited seating that might be tight for large groups. Two different menus are offered for lunch (11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.) and dinner (5 - 10 p.m.). For the price and quality of food served at the restaurant, Chez Siam seems to walk the middle of the road regarding Thai cuisine. Although some might consider the food overpriced, the large portions can be eaten for multiple meals. First sample the restaurant's cuisine at lunch with cheaper prices before committing to dinner at Chez Siam. To start, try the tasty vegetable rolls (Thai style spring rolls) …
