OPINION: Comfort Food at Bumpy's

Bumpy's diner cuisine and warm atmosphere creates a great place to relax with friends and family.

Bumpy’s Restaurant, also known as Main Street Café, is located in the epicenter of Marlborough. Vinyl booths and counter service give the restaurant more of a diner than café atmosphere. Multiple tables provide ample space for larger groups to descend on the location. Although one would not want to travel great distances to dine here, the comfort diner cuisine combined with the friendly staff creates a setting conducive to passing a lazy afternoon catching up and relaxing with old friends. When entering the establishment, be sure to look over the rotating specials located on a board by the front door. The homemade turkey soup tastes as if made by a favorite relative. Large chunks of tender turkey crowd the bowl. But beware that at Bumpy’s…

Good Food, No Frills at Linguine's Italian Eatery

Folks will find large helpings and reasonable prices at Linguine's Italian Eatery.

Linguine’s no frills, casual lunch counter service is refreshing for folks who just want to eat and aren’t concerned about atmosphere. The cooks serve up large helpings of fresh, comfort Italian cuisine to patrons eagerly watching them work in the exposed kitchen. For those doubtful of the cuisine, the multiple autographs hanging on the walls from the stars of the hit TV series The Sopranos reassures that this Italian eatery isn’t messing around. From the popular meatball dishes to homemade ravioli, tortellini and gnocchi, many guests stall at the counter, overwhelmed by the menu. Salads, pizza, calzones and sandwiches (both hot and cold) provide alternatives to the many pasta dishes. Add a twist to the pasta by ordering one of the seafood…

This has to be one of the best Italian resturants around the entire area. Traditional home made recipes, Italian style. Not fancy, come as you are and just enjoy one's self. It is a family atmosphere, outstanding service with food that can't be beat. Excellent prices, great choices of wallet friendly wines and beer as well. Canoli's are hand filled when ordered. You don't see that everywhere. Lou…   more ›

Midday Sushi at Japan One

Japan One serves up fresh sushi and good lunch deals to break up the work day.

Escape during the busy workday for midday sushi at Japan One. Located in the same strip mall as Hannaford, the space looks as if in a previous life it might once have been a Subway with the long, narrow construction. But that’s where the similarity begins and ends between the two eateries. Patrons have the option of either pulling up a chair at the sushi bar to watch the sushi chef in action while they dine, or settling in at one of the tables. However, seating is limited, and by 12:30 p.m. on a Monday, all the tables were filled, but turned over quickly. Priced at $9.50, the Lunch Bento Box is a good deal for the amount of food included. Folks receive miso soup or salad, four California rolls, three shumai, vegetables, rice, and choose …

Bold Coffee with a Caribbean Twist

Lala Java coffeehouse provides a cozy, unique atmosphere with good food and socially responsible coffee.

For any self-respecting coffeehouse, it’s as much about the atmosphere as it is about the coffee. Cabana umbrellas, Tiki statues and a fake palm tree infuse a tasteful Caribbean, Tiki-bar style into the Lala Java coffeehouse. Reggae, Caribbean and Latino music is the backdrop for the clanking of keyboard keys and soft conversation. The handful of high top and low top tables weave among shelves of merchandise, providing sound buffers and privacy among patrons. Behind the counter, large signs displaying the numerous food and drink choices hang from the ceiling. Gourmet grilled cheeses (choose your own ingredients), soups and an assortment of sandwiches will complement a cup of Joe to leisurely sip. LaLa Java also offers a selection of bagels…

Get a taste of Brazil at the Tropical Cafe

The Tropical Cafe serves up a wide array of homemade, flavorful Brazilian dishes.

From the outside, The Tropical Café appears to be like the multitudes of old-school diner cars scattered throughout central Massachusetts, but with a bit more flare. Upon first glance, the interior seems typical diner style with a line of booths hugging one wall and across the isle a long counter and stools providing additional seating. But then one notices the TVs at opposite ends of the diner play Brazilian shows. And the waitress inquires whether or not you require an English menu. Large cast iron vats containing simmering soups are labeled “Beef with Yucca,” “Corn and Pork,” “Red Beans,” and so on. Delightfully, the first-time customer realizes that no, this is not the traditional American fare, but a Brazilian diner. Begin your foray …

Big Appetite for the Big Apple

The Big Apple Restaurant serves quality breakfast and lunch dishes to help jump start your day.

Fresh blueberries and baked cinnamon apples tumbled from between two pieces of Texas French toast. The delicately sprinkled powder sugar dissolved upon contact with the blueberry juices and syrup, which spread across the plate. Although probably containing a week’s worth of sugar, the stuffed French toast was well worth the indulgence. The Big Apple Restaurant specializes in breakfast fare, but also offers a number of lunch dishes for those craving a sandwich or salad over a stack of pancakes. The restaurant sits inconspicuously along Boston Post Road, easy to miss if not on the lookout for it. The interior of The Big Apple is also unassuming – quaint and clean but lacking the character that will leave a lasting impression. However, a …

Sports and Music at the Westender

The Westender Upscale Sports Bar & Grille offers a little bit of everything: Great food, live music and coverage of the latest game.

The phrase “sports bar” for many people conjures up an image of a dimly lit, loud and gritty establishment serving up cheap, greasy finger foods to soak up generic beer like Budweiser and Miller Light as the big game plays in the background. But The Westender is the atypical sports bar, which owner Matthew Leduc opened in August of 2010. The bar is self-described as an upscale bar and grille. The high top tables glisten from the glow of the multiple flat screen TVs that frame the room. However, the focal point is not the TVs lining the walls, but rather the raised, carpeted stage hugging the far corner of the room. In case there was any doubt of its function, guitars replace the sports paraphernalia as wall decorations for this section of …

Good Beer, Great Food at Sully's

With a wide variety of pub food and beers, Sully's is a good pick any day of the week.

Wedged between the buildings of Main Street and a large parking deck, Sully’s First Edition Pub is the definition hole-in-the-wall pub, which was first opened in 1979. Knowing its location instantly catapults patrons to insider status. This isn’t the sort of place people accidentally stumble upon. This is the type of establishment a person is brought to as if being invited into a family or tight knit circle of friends. “Most who come here are Marlborough and Hudson people … they’re our regulars,” said owner Rick Sullivan Jr. Although an Irish pub by design, the occasional shamrock and leprechaun images are overshadowed by multiple flat screen TVs showcasing sports, which are wedged between a plethora of framed, signed sports jerseys and …

Marlborough's New Barbecue Eatery

Stevie's Eatery serves up quality barbecue at reasonable prices.

Sometimes the end says everything about the beginning. The difference between good and great barbecue shines through at the end of the meal. Are wet naps (also referred to as moist toilettes) required to clean off? Did the cornbread leave behind only a smattering of crumbs? “Barbecue is low, slow dry heat. Be careful to not overdue it and stick to the basics,” said Steve Dembro, owner of Stevie’s Eatery. And Steve knows great barbecue. Stevie’s specializes in New England style barbecue. All of their meat is smoked in house, using a mild Applewood flavor. And like any self-respecting barbecue connoisseur, their sweet, with a slight tang, tomato-based barbecue sauce is homemade … and available for sale. “The ribs are so tender that they just…

Went there once. Ribs were pedestrian and cold. Corn bread was really small and I figured that it had been frozen after he made it. Beans were OK, but nothing special. Small portions. I did not think the prices were too bad, but for what they charge, he should be making sure his quality and quantity are better than what I saw. I'll give it another shot........   more ›
