Are These Girls' Dresses Inappropriate?

Students at one California high school have challenged a policy that barred 40 teens from a school dance for outfits deemed "too tight."

With prom season almost here, a California high school has earned attention for its dress code. Students in Orange County, CA, have called Capistrano Valley High's policies a "repressed code," after 40 girls were subjected to wardrobe inspections before being admitted to a recent dance.  "There were these girls who have beautiful bodies, who are happy with their bodies—to have the principal ask what part of your body isn't the dress tight on, he makes me feel insecure," said senior Lindsay Kamikawa, editor of the school newspaper, who was among the girls prohibited from entering the dance. "I think that my principal has the best intentions when he was enforcing the dress code. I think that perhaps he didn't consider the position of a …

I agree with Jay - not worth Patch "local news", and clearly a move towards "tabloid" by the authors... actually can't really call them authors since it was "copied" from a high school paper. As for the dress - it's nothing new for those that remember the Beach Boys song, California Girls, that was 48 years ago people!! Laughs on those that think the dress is something new and corrupting.   more ›

Volunteers, Sponsors Help Keep Prom-Goers Safe All Night

The guest list is exclusive, admission is free, and it’s the biggest red-carpet party in town.

The Marlborough High School senior All Nighter is this weekend, and volunteer organizers have been busy creating a glittery after-prom event for MHS soon-to-be graduates. Following Friday night’s prom, seniors and their dates will climb onto a Marlborough Public Schools school bus one last time for the short trip to the Wayside Racquet and Swim Club, where they will be greeted like royalty and treated to games, food and fun until the wee hours of Saturday morning. All-Nighters will be able to try their hand at such contests and games as Trivial Pursuit, limbo, tug-of-war and Twister. They can take a swim or play some racquetball, and then munch on refreshing fruit cups and scrumptious desserts. They can be dazzled by a hypnotist or get a …

VIDEO: DA and Police Chief Talk to Students in Advance of Prom

Students were encouraged to show courage and leadership in their decision making.

Middlesex District Attorney Gerard Leone and Marlborough Police Chief Mark Leonard were on hand at Marlborough High School this morning talking frankly to juniors and seniors about prom safety. As chief law officer devoted to protecting and serving the public, Leone shared personal stories of tragedy laced with humor to drive his point home. When bad decisions and bad choices are made, he said, there will be tragic consequences. In a nutshell, he emphasized, when bad decisions are made then death is an “erie, tragic, morbid inevitability.” In order for prom night to be safe and successful, students must purpose to make good decisions, not compound bad ones, he added. According to Leone, car crashes are the number one killer for 15-20 year-…

Volunteers Help Girls Prepare for Prom

Marlborough Junior Woman's Club held The Princess Boutique to provide formal dresses and accessories for teenage girls who otherwise would have struggled to afford Prom.

Teenage girls will confirm that when it comes to prom and Sweet 16 parties, the dress is every bit as important as the event. But formal dresses more often than not are very expensive and don’t fit within the budgets of many young ladies. Marlborough Junior Woman's Club (MJWC) is working to remedy this problem. With the support of local businesses and volunteers, Marlborough Junior Woman's Club held its annual Metrowest Princess Boutique on Saturday, March 12 at Assabet Valley Regional High School. “We wished to make sure that as volunteers we help young women and their families who might be experiencing some struggles in life feel capable, confident and beautiful – fully able to enjoy and engage in activities that can play a role in …
