Crews Continue Hurricane Sandy Cleanup

Crews continue to restore power and clean up after Hurricane Sandy.

Although Marlborough avoided the flooding that ravaged other areas of the East Coast, the damage from Hurricane Sandy has left crews hard at work through the night dealing with the aftermath. “We had some trees down; nothing compared to last year but we did have some big trees come down," said Fire Chief James Fortin who said that at noon on Tuesday only seven secondary streets were considered blocked. The city made it through Hurricane Sandy with no reported injuries, he said. However, the weather did leave approximately 4,500 people without power overnight. “There was no rebuilding until this morning," said Chief Fortin. "After dark, it just slows everything down." He explained the ongoing winds into the night kept crews from rebuilding…

Eldridge to Lead Forum on 'Snowtober' National Grid Outages

Marlborough state senator Jamie Eldridge along with Rep. Steven Levy will talk to residents about how they were affected by the Halloween weekend storm and the resulting National Grid power outages.

State Senator Jamie Eldridge announced Monday that he will host a community forum to discuss the widespread power outages resulting from the Oct. 29 snowstorm on Thursday, Dec. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bigelow Auditorium in the Marlborough Public Library. Members of the public with concerns about the utility response are invited to attend and share their perspective. “The October snowstorm left many of my constituents without power—including heat—for several days. Bad weather and natural disasters are unpreventable, but there may be more we can do to prepare for these occurrences in the future. I look forward to hearing from constituents about their concerns and working together to improve service in the future,” said Eldridge. The …

National Grid: Power is Restored

It took over 4,000 employees from 13 states and 2 countries to return power after the Oct. 29 Nor'easter, according to a National Grid statement.

At 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, National Grid issued a statement confirming that power is now restored in Massachusetts. For Marlborough, that means the estimated 18,200 residential and commercial customers can now see the light. “This storm created a tremendous hardship for many of our customers and I am truly grateful for their patience during this ordeal,” said Marcy Reed, National Grid president, Massachusetts. “In more than 20 years working for National Grid and its predecessor company, Mass Electric, this is by far the worst and most widespread damage I have seen on our system.”  A 12-hour snow storm hit Marlborough in the late afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 29. Heavy, wet snow took down trees and wires across the town. Widespread power …

National Grid Outage Down to 18 in Marlborough

Marlborough is on track toward full power restoration by Thursday evening.

National Grid reported that just 18 customers were without power in Marlborough as of early afternoon on Thursday.  That number was down from over a 1,000 a day ago, and down 30,000 from the original number of customers without service in Marlborough.  Area schools canceled for the first two days of the week, but resumed classes Wednesday while several roads remained blocked and some families were out of town due to the power situation.  "I have a wife and two children," said Marlborough resident Sean Pollard. "We were forced to vacate our property on Monday evening as the temperature dipped below 50 degrees farhenheit. We could see our breath in the house from Sunday night on." Pollard's family left Marlborough until their power was …

Several days after the Oct. 29 snowstorm that left more than 30,000 Marlborough area residents in the dark, the company's website is reporting as of early Wednesday afternoon there are still 1,161 without power.  Tuesday afternoon National Grid said most residents could expect to have their power back as of Thursday night at the latest.  “We know this is a hardship for our customers and we’re grateful for their patience as we work to restore their power. Better Business Bureau, Police Encourage Wariness in Light of Post-Storm Scams

The BBB has received specific information pertaining to an individual going door-to-door claiming to be from the power company.

The Marlborough chapter of the Better Business Bureau is warning residents to be on the lookout for unscrupulous contractors and potential scams in the wake of the Halloween weekend snowstorm that left many people with damaged property.   Especially suspicious are those who sell their services door-to-door after such a storm. "After major weather related events, we hear numerous reports of folks being victimized again, not by Mother Nature, but rather at the hands of untrustworthy people who see this as a money-making opportunity," said Paula Fleming, a BBB Spokesperson here in Marlborough. “Some of the most common post-disaster scams involve home repairs, clean-up efforts, heating and cooling equipment and door-to-door contractors.” …

National Grid Estimates Restoration by Thursday Night in Marlborough

The power company released new numbers late Monday afternoon about the state of things the "Snowtober" event. News from Comcast on the Cable situation as well.

Many people around the state are referencing the weekend storm that hit most of Massachusetts as "Snowtober," others just call it a pain-in-the-neck.  National Grid, the company responsible for the electrical power needs of much of the state—including Marlborough—are scrambling to offer a defense for the accusation that they were caught off guard by the early season storm.  According to a document recently issued by the company, 18,200 customers have been serviced since the storm, with 7,883 customers still lingering in the dark. The latter number represents 43.1 percent of their Marlborough customer base, said the document.  By the start of Friday (12 a.m.), the company says they hope to have everyone up and running in Marlborough, save …

I grew up in a rural community in Wisconsin, where weather incidents left us without power for days at a time, in some cases, weeks. The luxuries (and make no mistakes, it IS a luxury.. not afforded in mant parts of the USA, never mind the world) that are afforded in an affluent area such as this.. and taken for granted, nearly as a "right", ranging from expectation of municipal services, to the …   more ›

UPDATE: No School Tuesday, Elections On and Halloween Postponed

As National Grid works to restore greater Marlborough to service, an array of services and community functions are being affected including cable television from Comcast.

Whether the snow had hit Marlborough or not, the Marlborough Public Schools were not going to have school on Tuesday. They planned to be closed to students in order to host a professional development day for teachers, and allow the schools to operate as polling centers in many of the city's wards.  "We didn’t have school scheduled for tomorrow," said Beth Wagner, a spokesperson for the district. "It was a professional development day for staff only. We’ve had to cancel the professional development day, however, because we still have four buildings without power." The Advanced Math and Science Academy also notified parents Monday afternoon that Tuesday classes had been canceled.  Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School had also …

My wife wanted to stay in a hotel. She missed her blow dryer, curling iron and heat of course. Well we sponged bathed, heated (gas) a pot of water on the stove and washed her hair in the kitchen sink, then, threw an extra comforter on the bed. A couple of hundred dollars worth of camping gear kept us all eating. Just know what you want in the fridge, open the door just long enough to grab what …   more ›
