Residents Debate Senior Center in Ward Park

Residents raised concerns over the Ward Park location for the new Senior Center Wednesday night.

Over 30 residents passionately discussed a 13,000 square foot Senior Center at Ward Park Wednesday night. “It sounds like this is a done deal as far as the politicians in this city go,” said Lou Papile who said the "dug out" that will be built over is the most highly used part of the park. Many residents near the park raised their concerns that this was essentially a done deal and the only way that improvements would come to the park. Among other concerns were noise and decrease in property values. Chief among the residents' concerns at the public hearing, organized by Ward Councilor Matt Elder, was a change in the nature of the park which had caused many residents to buy in the area in the first place. Yes it is a bribe. They're saying - we'll improve the park but only if we take a chunk of it away and put up a 13,000 square foot two story building. That is an awful trade off. One that would resonate down to future generations. Leave the park land alone and simply improve it for the sake of the children. Look at the ice skating rink, a wonderful addition to the park and exactly the area the …   more ›

Zoning Board Approves Brookview Village 40B

The Zoning Board of Appeals voted 3 to 2 to approve the 225 apartment complex Tuesday night.

In a vote that split the Zoning Board of Appeals 3 to 2, the "Brookview Village" 40B apartment complex was voted through Tuesday night pending approval of conditions. “We have to have another meeting where we will work on the conditions because there are going to be a lot of them," said Board Chairman James Natale. The vote gives the go ahead to 225 apartment units that will be placed off of Ames Street in an area in the middle of industrial and commercial developments that had previously been zoned commercial. It is being developed by the Gutierrez Company. Bill Caulder, from Gutierrez, stated that the company would be looking to develop the adjacent property into commercial and retail. The vote occured with ZBA members Lynn Faust and …

Supplemental School Funds “Unacceptable” to President Pope

City Council President Patricia Pope told the School Committee in no uncertain terms that returning for additional funds was unacceptable and must never happen again at a Finance Committee meeting Thursday.

City Council President Patricia Pope called the School Committee’s budget an abomination and embarrassment before the Finance Committee voted to recommend an additional $2.6 million to fill out the school budget. "This is absolutely unacceptable ... the budget is due to the city council the same time it’s always due,” said Pope explaining that the “hiccup” was no excuse as she referred to the ousting of Former Superintendent Anthony Pope. “The budget process this year was nothing short of an abomination and embarrassment.” The additional $2,581,967 represents a 5.3 percent increase over the FY '13 appropriated school budget of $50,852,532. The funds cover five major areas that include additional curriculum costs and special education …

I agree that a new facility is much given the current economic situation. Aging America does need a place to play and why don't they make the whole ward park a recreation center. The gym is in Bigelow School and then they can make the wading pool an expanded in door lap pool for all citizens not just the 200 elderly...be creative Marlborough!!!!!!   more ›
