Athlete of the Week

Athlete of the Week: Evan Merk

This Marlborough High School senior has more than 100 match wins under his belt.

Name: Evan Merk Graduating Class: 2012 Team: Marlborough Varsity Wrestling  Merk started wrestling in third grade, then stopped around sixth grade to pursue winter sports such as skiing. He returned to wrestling in the folk style used by most high schools in the eighth grade. When asked what he loved most about the sport, he was clear. "I guess it would be the fact that it is an individual sport, but you have the support of a team behind you as well. When you go out there it's just you, but you have the whole team around you, and they support you and you can support them." Stats: He is currently wrestling in the 145 pound weight class and is 24 and 2 this year. Merk earned his 102 win this past Wednesday. What's next: Merk has been …

IMAGE GALLERY: Marlborough Comes Out on Top in Turkey Day Game

The Panthers defeat Hudson High School 7-6 in the Thanksgiving day game.

Marlborough High School pulled a victory out of a third-quarter touchdown in Thursday's Thanksgiving matchup versus Hudson High School that ending up giving the visiting team the win.  The scoreboard read 0 for both teams until that point and Hudson responded with their own dramatic early fourth quarter rushing touchdown, but failed to make the kick for the extra point.  Without another score, the game ended 7-6 to the cheers of Marlborough fans and the chagrin the Hudson faithful.  Check out the photo gallery and tell your thoughts on the game in the comments.  Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date on the latest Marlborough news, or simply hit the "like" button at the top of this page.

IMAGE GALLERY: Marlborough Defeats Melrose in State Volleyball Final

The Lady Panthers defeated Melrose 3-1 in the Division 2 state championship on Saturday.

The Lady Panthers came out on top on Saturday in the varsity volleyball Division 2 state finals, defeating the Melrose Red Raiders in a 3-1 victory at Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough.   After winning the opening set 25-22 Melrose lost three straight sets by scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 25-20. The Panthers, the champs of Central Massachusetts, can now add state champions to their resume. Panthers run past Westborough, shut-out Rangers 36-0

The Panthers running attack was too much for the Rangers to handle as Marlborough defeated Westborough 36 - 0 in a Mid-Wach B contest at Kelleher Field.

Marlborough received all the offense it needed from Austin Garvey, Alex Tello and Paul Goulet as the Panthers ran past the Westborough Rangers 36 – 0 in a Mid-Wach B contest at Kelleher Field. The Panthers (6-3) compiled over 300 yards of offense on the ground while their defense held the Rangers (1-8) to only 157 total yards of offense. The Panthers did not waste anytime finding the end zone. Just over two minutes into the game, Tello capped off a Panthers drive with a 38-yard touchdown run.  The Panthers opening possession was a four play, 65-yard drive that lasted only 2:14. Marlborough Girls Volleyball Remain Undefeated, Sweep Algonquin 3-0

The Panthers defeated the Tomahawks 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-16) to improve to 15-0 overall and 11-0 in Mid-Wach A.

The Marlborough Girls Volleyball team remained undefeated on the season, sweeping the Algonquin Tomahawks 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-16) in a Mid-Wach A contest at the Marlborough High School Fieldhouse. Marlborough improved to 15-0 overall and 11-0 in Mid-Wach A. Algonquin fell to 11-5 overall and 6-4 in Mid-Wach A. Seniors Laura Silverman, Melissa Scott and Vanessa Pascal led the way for the Panthers, combining for a large majority of the team's kills and aces. Marlborough got off to a quick start, scoring the first five points of the first game, with Pascal serving up two aces. “The short serve usually works, and then they move in and I switch to the long one,” said Pascal when asked about her success on serves. Marlborough Lady Panthers Cling to Victory Over Groton-Dunstable

Despite two late goals from Groton-Dunstable, the Lady Panthers received goals from Anna McCabe, Sarah Purcell, and Jennifer Bombard and held on for the 3-2 win over the Mid-Wach B rival Crusaders.

The Marlborough Lady Panthers received goals from Anna McCabe, Sarah Purcell, and Jennifer Bombard as Marlborough defeated the Groton-Dunstable Crusaders 3-2 in a Mid-Wach B contest at Kelleher Field. The Crusaders, who fell behind 3-0, saw their goals come from Dani Kenney and Merideth Shea. McCabe led the offense for Marlborough with two assists to go along with her goal. The Crusaders came out and carried play to begin the first half, registering the first handful of shots and maintaining possession in the Panthers defensive half of the field. Crusaders Outduel Panthers, Remain Undefeated

The Groton-Dunstable Crusaders marched into Marlborough and defeated the Panthers 3-1, remaining undefeated on the season.

In a Mid-Wach B battle at Kelleher Field, the Groton-Dunstable Crusaders marched into Marlborough and defeated the Panthers 3-1, remaining undefeated on the season. Strikers Kyle Romich (two goals) and Nate Pomercy provided all of the offense for the Crusaders, while Paco Ceja chipped in the lone goal for the Panthers. The first half began with the teams trading possession and chances. Over time the Crusaders began to carry play, linking passes together in the attacking third and pressuring the Marlborough keeper. Fourteen minutes into the game Groton-Dunstable capitalized on their sustained pressure when, off a throw-in, Romich flicked a header over the outstretched arms of Panthers keeper Kevin Martins. “We wanted to come out hard and …

Panthers Strike Early and Often, Cruise to Victory Over North Middlesex

Marlborough provided plenty of offense as the Panthers cruised past the North Middlesex Patriots 35 - 14 in a Mid Wach B contest.

The running back tandem of Austin Garvey and Paul Goulet provided plenty of offense for the Panthers as Marlborough High School defeated the North Middlesex Patriots 35 – 14 at Kelleher Field in a rain-soaked, Mid-Wach B contest. The Panthers offense, which was averaging just 10.5 points per game entering this contest, exploded for 35 points in the first-half and finished the game with 281 rushing yards. Not to be outdone, their defense surrendered just 14 points, all coming in the second-half with their reserves in the game. The defense also intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles. Just 48 seconds into the first quarter the Panthers offense struck when on a 3rd and 6 run, Goulet broke through the defensive line and took the …
