A prisoner work program has saved the city over $20,000 in the last year.
Maintenance and upkeep is being accomplished in Marlborough through the volunteer work of inmates with over $20,000 in work accomplished in the last year. "The training you give the prisoners is phenominal. They have been doing work that would be very difficult for us to get to in a timely manner," said Marlborough Housing Director Douglas Bushman. Middlesex County Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian was in Marlborough Tuesday while a crew of inmates performed maintenance and repairs to properties owned by the Marlborough Housing Authority. The crew was part of the Middlesex County Sheriff's Community Work Program that has saved Marlborough $20,000 in the last year, he said. Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian teamed up with the city to clean up parks.
The broken window theory surmizes that one sign of wear and uncared for distress will bring similar mistreatment. The theory that was tested with a broken car window also applies to eliminating graffitti and cleaning in parks; something Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian teamed up with Marlborough officials to ensure happened over the summer. "The mayor understands the broken window theory," said the sheriff who explained even a little graffitti can have an impact. "It breeds crime and it affects a community." Governor is expected to name Middlesex County Sheriff by Jan. 1.
By Jan. 1, Gov. Deval Patrick is expected to name a successor to Middlesex County Sheriff James V. DiPaola, who authorities say killed himself in a Maine hotel room in November after he came under scrutiny for planning to simultaneously collect a pension and salary. The successor Patrick plans to name by the beginning of the new year will hold office until the next state election in 2012, according to reports from the Associated Press. A spokesman from the governor's office said Tuesday that the announcement is expected to be made soon. DiPaola won reelection as Middlesex County Sheriff in the Nov. 2 election, but announced his retirement on Nov. 22, effective Jan. 6, after the Boston Globe reported that he planned to exploit a loophole …
