Middlesex Sheriff Teams with City

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian teamed up with the city to clean up parks.

The broken window theory surmizes that one sign of wear and uncared for distress will bring similar mistreatment. The theory that was tested with a broken car window also applies to eliminating graffitti and cleaning in parks; something Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian teamed up with Marlborough officials to ensure happened over the summer. "The mayor understands the broken window theory," said the sheriff who explained even a little graffitti can have an impact. "It breeds crime and it affects a community." At the request of Mayor Arthur Vigeant, a crew from Sheriff Koutoujian’s Community Work Program (CWP) spent several days at Ward Park clearing weeds, vines and other debris. Additional work was completed at Stevens Park. This …

Lake Williams Trail Opens with help of Scouts

Eagle Scout candidate Brenton Sullivan and summer interns were among those who made a one mile trail around Lake Williams a reality.

Eagle Scout candidate Brenton Sullivan was among those who made a one mile trail around Lake Williams a reality. "People in the community can come and walk along Lake Williams. I feel that is very helpful," said the 16 year-old Sullivan who did the work with 20 other scouts from Boy Scout Troop 2. "It opens it up and people can enjoy Lake Williams." The one mile trail that wraps around a portion of Lake Williams was constructed through a combined effort by the DPW and Sullivan. It was a project many had pushed for throughout the years, according to Mayor Arthur Vigeant. “The Lake Williams Trail would not have happened without the collaboration and efforts of many people. I’m grateful that their hard work has given Marlborough another …

Mayor Pushes for Hockey Tourism with U.S. Ambassador to Canada

Marlborough's mayor attempts to boost tourism through a meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Canada.

As part of a continuing bid to increase tourism to the city, Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant and vice chairman of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) met with U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson. “Canadian tourists and visitors have a significant impact on the Marlborough economy over the Thanksgiving weekend due to the hockey championships as well as the attraction of the Black Friday sales at the Solomon Pond Mall," said the mayor in a press release. The meeting was part of the mayor's trip to Ottawa to recruit hockey teams to Marlborough during the upcoming North American Fall Championships at the New England Sports Center, which is one of the largest facilities of its kind in North America. Brookview Village Cut to 225 Units

The developers have cut the numbers but the controversy remains around Marlborough's proposed "friendly" 40B.

The developers of the "Brookview Village" 40B have cut the number of units at the complex down to 225 following a request by a Zoning Board of Appeals member. "I think that would remedy some of the issues that you have," said Board Member Paul Giunta in reference to drainage and wetlands at a meeting with the developers last month. The developers responded with a plan that cut the development down from the proposed 243 units to 225. The portion of affordable units remains the same although the number drops to 56. This would continue to ensure that Marlborough would not go below it's 10 percent affordable housing requirement until 2029, according to representatives from the developer. Brookview Village is a 225 unit "friendly 40B" apartment…

Mayor Vigeant Talks "Brookview Village"

Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant is in favor of the additional control over affordable housing units that "Brookview Village" gives the city.

Mayor Arthur Vigeant recently spoke in favor of the “Brookview Village” development and the control it gives over additional 40B units in the city. “We will be above our 10 percent threshold for years to come, “ he said during a recent interview with Patch. While the merits of putting residential housing among the industrial properties off Route 20 have been discussed at an ongoing public hearing before the Zoning Board of Appeals, the mayor says that this “friendly” 40B affords the city more control as it is already above the required threshold for affordable housing. The city has more say over the development when it is above the mandated threshold, he said. Let Patch save you time. Get great local stories like this delivered right to …

If, as one commenter previously noted, this site was zoned for industrial development, which would garner a higher tax rate than residential, why permit housing with its lower tax income and the attendant education, police, fire and DPW costs?   more ›

Mayor Issues Report on Alleged Superintendent Misconduct

Mayor Arthur Vigeant's office has completed its investigation into the alleged wrongdoing by Superintendent Anthony Pope.

After months of complaints and allegations leveled by the student body, parents, and even teachers, Mayor Arthur Vigeant's office has completed an investigation into the alleged misconduct of Superintendent of Schools Anthony Pope.  The report, which will eventually become public record, has not been released as of this post and is in the hands of the Marlborough School Committee, reported the Main Street Journal on Sunday.  Many of the arguments against Pope stem from the suspension and eventual firing of Assistant High School Principal Adam Bakr. Bakr spent approximately half the school year suspended with pay until he was let go by the district in mid-April.  The major point of contention in the investigation targeting Pope, is to …
