Councilor Elder Seeks Input on Senior Center in Ward Park

City Councilor Matt Elder is exploring where his constituents stand on a senior center in Ward Park.

Editor's Note: The following information was submitted by City Councilor Matt Elder. Starting today, Ward 3 City Councilor Matt Elder is canvassing his entire Ward and setting up a neighborhood meeting at the over 55 residential community in his ward to reach his constituents to see where they stand on the Senior Center being built on Ward Park. This is the second attempt Elder has put forth to get input from his constituents. A few weeks ago, Elder canvassed over half his ward to solicit his constituents’ thoughts on the  project. “A few weeks ago I dropped off some neighborhood letters to various parts of the Ward, and I also asked for where they stood on the senior center being built on Ward Park, and the back side of the letter was a …

Local Sports League Donates Canned Goods

A canned food drive lead to a recent donation to the Marlborough Food Pantry.

Editor's note: The following information was submitted by Matt Elder. Dozens of canned goods were recently donated to the Marlborough Food Pantry after a local youth sports league ran a canned food drive where parents generously donated the items. Matt Elder, Ward 3 City Councilor and Program Director of i9 Sports, dropped off dozens of canned goods that the families of i9 Sports donated. “We said we’d give anyone who donates a $10 gift certificate to be used for any future program, but the funny thing is that a majority of the families just dropped off the food without any mention of the savings,” Elder said. “It was really great to see.” Starting last fall, the leagues held a complimentary pizza party for the kids at the fields or courts…

Senior Center Could Bring Money to Ward Park

City officials are saying that locating a new Senior Center in Ward Park could help bring money for improvements to the park.

Like the proposed location for a new Senior Center or not, City Officials are saying it could be the key to getting money for improvements to Ward Park where is is proposed to be located. “[Ward Park] has always been on the backburner to something else in the city," said Mayor Arthur Vigeant. "This is going to elevate it ... to the top of the list of the projects.” Having a diversity of buildings will help speed up the timeline for getting money to improve the park, as well as pushing the park improvements up to the top of the list, he said. Councilor Matt Elder spoke about the benefits strictly within the city. Having the center located at the park transforms improvements there into a city-wide issue, he said. It will be easier to funnel …

If you've got 7 mil to spend on a senior center you can certainly use that money to "spruce up" Ward Park without building on it.   more ›

Residents Debate Senior Center in Ward Park

Residents raised concerns over the Ward Park location for the new Senior Center Wednesday night.

Over 30 residents passionately discussed a 13,000 square foot Senior Center at Ward Park Wednesday night. “It sounds like this is a done deal as far as the politicians in this city go,” said Lou Papile who said the "dug out" that will be built over is the most highly used part of the park. Many residents near the park raised their concerns that this was essentially a done deal and the only way that improvements would come to the park. Among other concerns were noise and decrease in property values. Chief among the residents' concerns at the public hearing, organized by Ward Councilor Matt Elder, was a change in the nature of the park which had caused many residents to buy in the area in the first place. Yes it is a bribe. They're saying - we'll improve the park but only if we take a chunk of it away and put up a 13,000 square foot two story building. That is an awful trade off. One that would resonate down to future generations. Leave the park land alone and simply improve it for the sake of the children. Look at the ice skating rink, a wonderful addition to the park and exactly the area the …   more ›
