The School Committee voted in a new, permanent Superintendent Tuesday night.
The School Committee voted 6 to 1 to accept a three year contract with Richard Langlois as the new permanent Superintendent for the school district. "I look forward to stepping in July 1st," said Langlois who currently works as the Superintendent for the Saugus School District. "I think this is a great partnership and great marriage." The committeevoted 6 to 1 to approve the $185,000 contract that includes 25 vacation days, 30 sick days and $2,000 for travel expenses. Interim Superintendent Stephen Dlott was signed for $180,000 for the year, although he was to be paid for a shorter term, said Mayor Arthur Vigeant. School Committee Member Mark Hediger was the sole negative vote, saying that he did not approve of language which shifted the …

Superintendent focus groups have revealed community concerns with contention between the City Council and School Committee, a poor image of the district and not knowing who to trust.
In looking for a new superintendent, the company Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA), conducted focus groups that revealed concerns that are often not discussed in a public forum. "Lack of trust across and among many individuals and groups in the school district is a large challenge," according to a report from HYA. Interviews with 111 people including community members, staff, students, school board members and employees were conducted in November. A total of 397 online surveys were also conducted. The interviews and focus groups were done to guide the selection of a new superintendent. Officials are saying the lagging MCAS scores do not reflect the work being done in the district and will not for some time.
School officials highlighted the proper approach of teachers and administration across the district even as Marlborough's MCAS scores lag behind the state average. “I think you are doing it the right way,” said Interim Superintendent Stephen Dlott of the decision to change curriculum to align it completely with new standards. “The scores don’t reflect that yet.” The changes to MCAS goals and testing prompted the district to pursue a huge curriculum change last year. This was the right direction he said, but the results cannot be seen yet and will not be immediately. “It’s not going to skyrocket. Scores don’t work like that,” said Dlott. It will take three to four years for the scores to truly reflect these new curriculums, said Kane …

Adopting a full-day kindergarten was discussed by the School Committee along with the required expansion the district would have to undertake, with some committee members suggesting tapping into unused commercial buildings.
With a school district that has been in need of additional room for students, officials said a committment to having a full load of full-day kindergarten classes could require a new school building. "I hope I'm not shocking the community, but you need a school," said Interim Superintendent Dr. Stephen Dlott at Tuesday's School Committee meeting. The need for a new school is nothing unknown to the district, he said, but with his vision for a complete full-day kindergarten the need for a new building becomes even more immediate. The city currently has 13 sections of full-day kindergarten and nine sections of half-day kindergarten. Let Patch save you time. The School Committee accepted over $25,000 in donations this week.
School Committee members expressed their thanks to area businesses as they accepted over $25,450 in donations earlier this week. "I want to thank the employees of the district for pursuing these opportunities," said Committee Member Jennifer Hardy. Of those funds, $20,000 were from Intel to go towards the STEM Program at the High School. That money will help offset $40,000 that the school district had to pay towards $110,000 in laptops for STEM Early College High School students. A total of $70,000 was paid for through Race to the Top funds, said William Rigney, a STEM instructional specialist. This donation will help defray the rest of the costs taken on by the district. "We have had a long-standing relationship with Intel of …

Interim Superintendent Dr. Stephen Dlott talked to the preparedness of the district hours before the first day of school at the School Committee meeting Tuesday night.
From the bus schedule to getting a full staff in place, there was a lot to line up before the beginning of school this year. "I'm very excited about the opening and very excited to be a member of the Marlborough public schools," said Interim Superintendent Dr. Stephen Dlott at Tuesday's School Committee Meeting. Adjustments to the bus schedules will continue as students get into the seats, he said. While some students may have to walk to their bus stops, the students age and the safety of the intersections have been taken into account. School Committee Member Katherine Hennessy encouraged parents to continue informing the district of any concerns or issues with the bus schedule. "Things are not going to be known if they are not articulated…
Administrators reflected on their past experiences with the first day as students as well as their favorite parts of the first day of school now.
As students file off of buses and into the classroom today, some will be wracked with nerves and others full to the brim with excitement. As it turns out, these feelings were no different for school administrators when they were attending school. "The new bookbag and the new lunch box. Those were my favorite things," said Maria Silletti, the principal at Richar School."The fresh crayons and the smelly markers ... all that fun stuff." For Mary Murphy, the principal at Whitcomb Middle School, it was the first day outfit that she looked forward to the most. "I always loved dressing up on the first day," she said. Cheryl Piccirelli reflected on how different school was for her, where you would walk to class and then go home for lunch, than it …

Some MHS students claim Superintendent Anthony Pope acted unprofessionally during a January sit-in.
Mayor Arthur Vigeant is looking into allegations from students that Superintendent Anthony Pope behaved unprofessionally and attempted to intimidate students who were protesting the sudden departure of a popular assistant principal. "I am in the process of reviewing the incident from Jan. 27, 2012 at Marlborough High School," Vigeant said during Tuesday's School Committee meeting, reading a statement he said was drafted after consulting the committee's legal counsel. Vigeant's disclosure comes two months after two Marlborough High School students voiced complaints to the School Committee about the way Pope acted during a sit-in at MHS protesting the sudden and yet-unexplained departure of longtime assistant principal Adam Bakr. Bakr last…
