Editor's Note: The following information was provided by the Marlborough Public Library. The Marlborough Public Library’s newsletter was recently awarded an Honorable Mention in the 21st Public Relations Awards given out by the Massachusetts Library Association. Awards were presented on April 25 at their annual conference in Cambridge, MA. Library Director, Margaret Cardello, accepted the award on behalf of the library but credits the staff with the newsletter’s success. “The staff came up with the idea just about a year ago to create a newsletter to keep residents up to date on everything that is happening at the Library,” said Cardello. Massachusetts Author Andre Dubus III spoke about the life that lead him to write the memoir Townie during a recent visit to the Marlborough Public Library.
From a rough-and-tumble life to the author of a book that was turned into an award-nominated movie, Massachusetts Author Andre Dubus III talked Wednesday about his life and what it takes to write in the modern world. "Writing saved me. Writing got me off the path," said Dubus to a group of 40 that came out to hear the author of the "House of Sand and Fog" speak at the Marlborough Public Library. That path was one of a violent youth who had taken to fighting those who picked on others after a traumatic incident involving a younger brother. The memoir in which he captured this time in his life, titled "Townie," has turned into a book for a generation in his home town of Haverhill who grew up in similar circumstances, said Dubus. He …

The Marlborough Public Library is playing host to a teen writing program Thursday.
The Marlborough Public Library will host "Word Wars: Teen Writing Event" tomorrow from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The program allows teens to register and compete in mini writing challenges against their peers. These challenges include like Write or Die (Speed Writing), Cake vs Pie (persuade your peers that your topic is superior) and Character Palooza (write a story based on a set list of characters, revealed at special times). The Marlborough Public Library continues with a program using Harry Potter to get children engaged in reading.
Children that love to read fantasy and their parents have a group at the Marlborough Library aimed at their tastes. Stop by the Children's Room to find out what book the group be discussing this month on Monday., Nov. 5 from 7 to 8 p.m. and to pick up your copy. Registration is required and is limited to 15 children. This program is recommended for ages 10 and up. Register by calling the Children's Room at 508-624-6900 or by stopping by.

Next Monday, the Marlborough Public Library will be hosting Julie Berry, author of the Splurch Academy series and The Amaranth Enchantment. Berry will be discussing her published works and forthcoming titles from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Bigelow Auditorium. She will answer questions about her writing process and her writing life. Berry will also engage the audience with her own questions. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Registration for this event is required and began Monday.
