Officials Push to Restore Community Policing

Mayor Arthur Vigeant and Police Chief Mark Leonard are pushing to get community policing back.

City officials are pushing to fill police positions and bring community policing back to the downtown and the French Hill neighborhoods. “We are hoping to have [community policing] back in the spring," said Mayor Arthur Vigeant at a recent meeting explaining the issue extends to the fire department which is also down personnel. “I want those spots filled in the police and fire department." Two officers that had been doing full-time, community policing had to be reassigned to patrol duty due to injuries and openings in the department, said Police Chief Mark Leonard. “It’s the additional burdons the long-term injuries place on us that have really been the cause to pull out the community policing officers," he said. A regional lockup center run by the Middlesex Sheriff's Office has been approved at an estimated $1.5 million after politicians and police officials pushed for the additional center. "Securing funding for the regional holding facility was a team effort that included every police chief in Middlesex County," said Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian. "A regional lockup will help save local departments money and allow them to take officers off prisoner watch and put them on community watch." The Executive Office of Administration and Finance recently committed to funding the $1.5 million estimated project cost using capital expenditures. While the money has not been allocated from a specific funding mechanism yet, this represents a step in the …

How many officers will be eliminated by this move? Or how many overtime hours will be eliminated? How can the City Councilors monitor the reductions? And of course how many additional politically appointed individuals will be hired by the democrat controlled sheriff's department - where will the funding come from? Of course the likely answer is it will be paid for by the STATE, and only someone …   more ›
