Marlborough High Student Writes a Book

A Marlborough High School student has written a book that is being published and will be available at the school.

Editor's Note: The following information was provided by the Marlborough School District. Marlborough High School Senior Ali Russohas added a new accomplishment to a resume that includes all-star vocalist and honor roll student — published author. “It’s Always Ourselves We Find in the Sea” has just been released on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and is popping up in various bookstores. It is available in Kindle digital form as well. The journey from writing in journals to penning a young adult novel began when Russo was 15. She and her father spend part of their summers on Nantucket, a “special place that recharges me for the new school year” she said. Marlborough AP Teachers Recognized

Two Marlborough AP teachers are among 15 to be recognized by a Massachusetts educational organization.

Congratulations to Marlborough High School English teacher Jose Reyes and science/technology and engineering teacher Kathleen Richov, two of just 15 advanced placement (AP) teachers throughout the state to be named “Teachers in Excellence” by Mass Insight Education and Partners in Excellence. Students Soar with Design Challenge State Win

Marlborough students are on to the national competition of the Real World Design Challenge following their third state win in a row.

Students will head to Washington for the third consecutive year representing Massachusetts in the Real World Design Challenge as they tackle aviation problems that appear in the real world. “The goal is to give students real world experience solving problems," said Ben Shepherd who is a co-leader of the team along with Rachel Dass. "You don’t get the full experience until you get to experience putting together a solution that exists in the real world. Students are given a problem and then tackle it in the best way possible with input from local businesses — such as Raytheon — as they compete at the state level. Marlborough All-State Concert Students Named

Marlborough High School Students will participate in this year's All-State Music Concert.

Marlborough High School is pleased to announce three MHS students have been selected to participate in the 2012-13 All-State Music Concert. Congratulations to Alessandra Russo (alto, chorus), Nicholas Dell-Isola (tenor, chorus) and Christopher Syers (trombone, band). These students will perform with 500 of the most talented student musicians from across the state.  They represent excellence in achievement and, therefore, are known as Symphony Hall Scholars.  These outstanding musicians will take center stage at Boston Symphony Hall on March 2, 2013. Hockey Team Supporting End to Violence Against Women

The Varsity Boy's Hockey team joins a national effort during their game Saturday.

The team is participating in the White Ribbon campaign, and at Saturday’s game team members and coaches will have signed a White Ribbon pledge and will wear white in support of the campaign. The White Ribbon campaign is a men’s initiative project of Jane Doe Inc., which works to secure funding, pass laws and change regulations, practices and policies to enhance sexual assault and domestic violence intervention and prevention services for victims and their children, and to hold perpetrators accountable. Chief Leonard: Police School Presence an “Overabundance of Caution”

Police Chief Mark Leonard said that an increased police presence at Marlborough Schools was taken to alleviate people's fears and concerns.

The police presence at Marlborough schools today is intended to alleviate concerns in response to internet chatter, Police Chief Mark Leonard told Patch Friday. “Really it is just an over abundance of caution to let everyone know we are there," he said. “It is just allieviating everyone’s fears and concerns." Police have been talking with school officials, staff and fire officials all week, said Chief Leonard. “We went over everything; safety procedures and protocol," he said. "Rumors of violence" on Facebook have prompted placement of police at the Middle and High Schools.

Update — Police Chief Mark Leonard has said that a police officer has also been placed at Assabet Valley Vocational School today. He also stated that additional patrols will go through the elementary schools in the city. In an interview with Patch, he said all of this was done to alleviate fears and represents an "overabundance" of caution. Home for the Holidays on the Common Tonight

The Home for the Holidays tradition will take place tonight beginning at 6 p.m. at the Marlborough Union Common.

Kick off the holidays with Marlborough's Christmas Tree lighting and holiday music tonight. The celebration will take place at the Marlborough Union Common at the intersection of Route 20 and Route 85. The tree lighting by the mayor will take place at 6 p.m. with the Marlborough High School Mixed Chorus. Performances at the First Congregational Church will also take place at 6:45 p.m. with the Marlborough High School String Ensemble and the  Marlborough High School Jazz Band at 7:30 p.m. The event will also feature Santa, hot chocolate, balloons, popcorn and barn animals.
