Top 5 Holiday Concerts and Performances

There are many different instruments and voices nearby bringing you sounds of the season.

1. String and Jazz Holiday Music at Solomon Pond Mall: One of the many local, community musical groups at the Mall this holiday season. Marlborough High School  students will perform familiar string and jazz holiday pieces on Thursday, Dec. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Solomon Pond Mall to entertain you while you shop. This is a free event. 2. Interboro Band Holiday Concert: This band of 50 musicians from Marlborough, Northborough, Southborough, Westborough and other communities consists of people of all ages from teens to seniors! Come hear their holiday program on Sunday, Dec. 11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Trottier School, 49 Parkerville Rd., Southborough. There is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated! 3. Music Review: A Big Week for the Drive-By Truckers, And This Weekend in Marlborough

DBT releases a new album and documentary in same week.

I find it difficult to pretend to be objective when reviewing a new release by the Drive-By Truckers. To declare them simply my favorite band would be a gross understatement. I've travelled hundreds of miles to see them live, had my living room walls covered with their posters, and had my heart broken when Jason Isbell and the band parted ways. The day they release a new album is my favorite day of the year (at least, it certainly seems like an annual event). So this past Tuesday was an extra special event for die-hards like myself, as it saw the release of both the band's  excellent new album, "Go Go Boots," and the gripping DBT rockumentary "The Secret To A Happy Ending." Smith Westerns Release Sophomore Effort, Plus This Weekend in Marlborough

Entertainment columnist Jon Gourd reviews the latest effort from Smith Westerns.

"Dye It Blonde", Smith Westerns' follow-up to their very, very lo-fi 2009 self-titled debut, sees the brash, babyfaced Chicago quartet clean up their glam-pop/rock sound considerably, and the result is one of the first standout albums of 2011. Losing none of the sugary, poppy, dreamy sound of their debut, their sophomore album (and first on Fat Possum Records) is all big hooks, soaring guitar riffs, and sing-along choruses. The substantial increase in production values helps magnify just how good these kids are at writing a song that ends up getting stuck in your head for days.
