Local tennis players have come together to raise funds for one of their own who was injured recently in an accident on Parmenter Street.
Local tennis players are coming together Friday night during a fundraiser for Mike Mashkevich who was severely injured in an accident that sent three to the hospital. “I think the tennis community is really rallying around him and doing everything they can," said Steve Winer, director of Tennis at the Wayside Racquet & Swim Club who explained Mike is making strides in his recovery after recently coming out of a coma. "He is in the right place medically. We are trying to do what we can as a club." Mike is a United States Tennis Association 5.0 rated player of Central Mass League who plays in the Men's A League from Wayside Racquet & Swim Club. Those that survive an intense car crash can face months of rehabilitation towards a life that will be much different than the one they used to lead. “(Mike) is getting better every day but he is quite confused sometimes," said his girlfriend Nela Rudicka, explaining that it will be six to twelve months before his true mental state is known. “We are not sure how he is going to be or how much he remembers." Mike Mashkevich, who recently turned 25, lives in Marlborough and is a Senior Programmer Analyst at the Staples Corporate Office in Framingham and Stonehill College alumni. The October Parmenter Street car accident that resulted in a victim — who has since been in a coma — being life flighted has pushed a family friend to action.
It was an accident that sent three to the hospital, with Mike Mashkevich making the trip by helicopter to UMass Worcester where he is in a coma recovering. “He is making progress to getting better but he has so many broken bones," said Jessie Seiders who described Mike as her best friend and who has started a fundraising effort to help the family. "He just started opening his eyes.” Mike was sitting in the front passenger seat and took the brunt of the accident, she said. The driver and rear seat passenger — who fractured his legs — have been released from the hospital, said Seiders. Mike is 24 and living in Marlborough. Rescue crews were busy in the last week with an exploding home and an accident that required a life flight.
Gas has been called the cause of a house explosion that shook a neighborhood while one person had to be taken by helicopter to a hospital following an accident on Parmenter Road. At 1:04 a.m. on Sunday morning, multiple 911 calls were received alerting the Marlborough Fire Department to a house explosion at 15 Grant Ct. Neighbors reported feeling the explosion which left the house's walls blown out and the structure on fire. "It has been confirmed to be a gas explosion and the cause is not determined yet," said Fire Chief James Fortin. An investigation by Marlborough Fire Department's Fire Investigations Unit and the State Fire Marshal's office is ongoing, he said. Police have charged four men after a fourth man was beaten and lifeflighted to the hospital.
Four men have been charged in what police describe as a "vicious attack" that resulted in the victim being lifeflighted with severe internal injuries. "The vicious attack was directed to the torso area, causing serious injuries to (the victim)," said Marlborough Police Officer Keith Moro in his report. Police responded to a report of a man with a head injury at 10:35 p.m. on Friday, October 5 at Homestead Village on 19 Northboro Road East. When they arrived, they found one male victim who had to be lifeflighted to UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester, according to court records.
