In the week since the early morning crash that took the life of Marlborough resident and well-known Worcester area musician James "Scott" Ricciuti, thousands have viewed the articles reporting his death and those remembering his life. Dozens have left comments in memorial and many are sure to attend his funeral services that are set to begin Thursday afternoon. By any standard, this is an uniquely large outpouring for an individual who clearly touched many people's lives. Friends and family will speak to those assembled and each other about the lasting impressions Ricciuti left on those around him, first at a wake to be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday at the Slattery Funeral Home, then the memorial service to be celebrated beginning at 11…

Marlborough High School senior Matthew Zinck is really looking forward to winter break in February, but it's not because he wants to sleep late, ski or head to a warm beach. Zinck will be part of a small team of doctors, medical students and a couple of high school students who will trek to the tiny African country of Malawi—wedged tightly between Zambia and Mozambique—to help set up a medical clinic and administer care and teach good public health practices to the poverty-stricken people there. This will be Zinck’s second such trip. Last year, he joined a similar group, also led by Dr. Brian Lisse, to Nicaragua. To go there, he had to take two tests—one in Spanish—as part of a competitive field of students who wanted to go. He won the …

Furnishing Options director Diane Ring profiles volunteer Kerry Higgins, and talks to her about what makes her tick.
Kerry Higgins first started volunteering with Furnishing Options two years ago. Since then, she has come to love helping out this program and really believes in its mission. Furnishing Options, which is run by Employment Options, a Marlborough-based agency, collects furniture, linens and household goods in good condition that people aren’t using and gives those items to people in need. As Higgins explains, when she first got on her own, “it was all hand-me-down furniture” and she sees her participation in this program as a way of paying it forward. Employment Options helps people who have experienced challenges in life and are on the road to recovery. Having a place to call home and an independent lifestyle is a huge step in this process …

Throughout the month of December Marlborough residents have voted online and sent emails praising the work of teachers in our community.
In early December we asked our readers to give us the name of the teacher that has most affected the lives of their children this year. While every name submitted was certainly worthy of recognition, the Advanced Math and Science Academy's Mark Vital earned the most votes here at Marlborough Patch. We asked Mark a little bit about what makes him tick, and here is what he said: 1. Tell us a bit a about yourself. Where are you from? How long have you been a teacher? How long have you taught in Marlborough? I was born in Marlborough and attended the public schools, graduating from Marlborough High with a full ROTC scholarship. I attended Clark University and took my military classes at WPI. I graduated from Clark with a major in Psychology …

Marlborough Patch asked resident, family man, Patch contributor and volunteer Paul Bishop to share with us during this season of giving. Tell us about you and your family. My wife Karen is from Milford, but I grew up in rural Wisconsin, the adopted son of a Navy man and a teacher. Tragically both died in a gas explosion in our home when I was fifteen, with myself and two siblings being taken in by my aunt and uncle. I decided there were many memories that were best left behind, and after a half-hearted few years of college, I made the grand adventure of loading my belongings in a pickup and driving East. I ended up in Framingham, and eventually met the intriguing and beautiful woman that I made my wife. We met and married after I came to…

One local resident is trying to explore the depths of Marlborough's wartime history.
Long-time Marlborough resident Kathleen Lizotte Lynde has created a Facebook page seeking out the stories of local World War II veterans. Marlborough Patch asked Lynde about what inspired this project and what she hopes to accomplish through it. 1. What inspired this project? My love for history and the past. Forty-plus years ago when I found myself married with two small children and a husband who worked 6 days a week I needed a hobby that didn't cost me much but my free time. I wanted to know more about my ancestors and where they came from. I became the family historian. Knowing that my maternal family had been in Marlborough since 1861 and my paternal family since 1881 and my husband's family had been in the area since the Mayflower, …

Kim Rosen is a Marlborough resident and photographer who spends her spare time raising money for cancer research at St. Jude Children's Hospital with a nonprofit business called Photos for Cures. Marlborough Patch asked her some questions this week about what makes her tick. In anticipation of Small Business Saturday (Nov. 26), think about using this local service that benefits a life-saving cause. Tell us about Photos for Cures. How did you get the idea? I founded photos for cures on May 24, 2010 the day a friend lost her three-year-old son to cancer. I combined my love for photography with my love of raising money and awareness for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. My mother was actually the one who suggested raising money this way…

Mr Bishop doesn't even touch on the fact that he volunteered for many years with the Red Cross Disaster Team before he got sick. He is someone who is very giving of his time and will help anyone, even when he's not feeling his best.   more ›
