Marlborough firefighters responded to a fire on Lincoln Street that was reportedly caused by a lightning strike Wednesday night. Update: The fire reportedly caused upwards of $50,000 in damage to units within the building. Original Article: Fire department personnel were on scene at 10:20 p.m. according to scanner information, with chatter indicating that a lightning strike at 406 Lincoln Street had triggered a fire by the roofline of that building. The fire had reportedly activated sprinklers. Reports indicated that the fire was under control shortly after 10:30 p.m. When contacted for comment immediately after the incident fire officials said the department was responding to multiple incidents.

A department effort extinguished a fire at the Marlborough Court Condominiums Wednesday night.
A balcony fire at the Marlborough Court Condominiums was extinguished by the Marlborough Fire Department around 6 p.m. Wednesday. "Engine Three’s crew made entry and cleared everybody out and extinguished the fire along with the help of other companies," said Marlborough Fire Department Deputy Chief John McGrath of the top floor apartment. “It was a department effort.” The damage was limited to one unit, he said, with rescue tower, engine one and engine three responding to the scene. “The main damage is exterior to the top balcony with some minor smoke and water damage inside," said McGrath who explained every other unit at the complex was unaffected. “Only one condo was affected. Marlborough's newest firefighters are native to the city and two follow in the footsteps of family members.
Marlborough's latest additions to the fire department were all born in the city and have dreamed of being firefighters since they were young. "We are all excited. It's something we've all been looking forward to for a number of years," said Omar Atocha-Torres, one of the new firefighters. "We feel honored and blesed to be working for the city." Atocha-Torres graduated from the Massachusetts Fire Academy in June of last year. He is presently assigned to Shift 4. No chemical reaction was involved in the Dow Chemical Plant fire last week.
Moisture in a light fixture is to blame for a reported $100,000 fire at Dow Chemical Plant last Friday. “Any fire is a concern obviously," said Paul Connor, the Director of Environmental Health and Safety for Dow Electronic Materials which is part of Dow Chemical Company. "There was never any chemistry involved in this particular incident." The fire in a light fixture triggered a sprinkler, although fire officials responded to the scene as well, he said. From a fire at a chemical plant on Friday to a request for over $200,000 in additional overtime to the police and fire departments; it was a big week for safety officials and personnel.
The week started out with a bureaucratic moment for the police and fire departments when Mayor Arthur Vigeant requested an additional $215,000 in overtime for the departments. The money is said to cover overtime due to vacancies and injuries. Additional firefighters and police officers will help to curb this overtime in the future, said the mayor. Police injuries were reported a number of times this week. There is no news on the severity of the injuries as this is something the police department does not release information on. A fire early Thursday morning has caused an estimated $100,000 in damage at a Dow Chemical plant on Forest Street in Marlborough.
It was an early morning fire that set off the sprinkler system at the Dow Chemical plant at 455 Forest Street combining with a fire to cause an estimated $100,000 in damage, according to fire officials. The report came in at 7:45 a.m. for a faulty ductwork smoke detector and then the sprinkler system activated, according to a press release from the Marlborough Fire Department. The fire was the first of two put out by firefighters yesterday, with the second occuring at Strange Brew. Firefighters confirmed the fire after arriving on the scene. The Marlborough Fire Department will be at the full staffing level by July.
The fire department will be at full staffing levels by July, with five fire fighter candidates scheduled to attend a recruit class. “Once we get those five people on board we will be at maximum staffing," said Fire Chief James Fortin at a Finance Committee meeting Monday. “By July first we will be at the maximum level.” Bringing up that staffing level, and thus cutting the reliance on overtime, has been a goal of Mayor Arthur Vigeant. Two structure fires hit the city over the weekend.
Marlborough firefighters fought two structure fires over the weekend. The first fire broke out at 5:21 p.m. on Friday at 698 Pleasant Street. When the first engine arrived, heavy smoke was visible from the eaves of the building and there was no access to the basement area, according to a release from the fire department. Fire fighters were able to gain entry to the basement area, where the fire was, from the cellar stairs.
