The city of Marlborough Department of Public Works announced recently that there will be a curbside pickup of Christmas trees in the coming weeks. The city’s Department of Public Works, Forestry, Parks and Cemeteries Division, will cover the city collecting Christmas trees for a three week period beginning Monday, Jan. 9 through Friday, Jan 27. "Trees should be left curbside for pickup on the same day as your normal weekly refuse pickup," said a release. "Condominiums that are on the city’s regular refuse schedule will also be picked up." Trees that are not completely clean and free of tinsel, ornaments and/or bows will not be picked up. No trees will be picked up in plastic bags or with tree stands, said the release. Here is a list of things going on in and around Marlborough today.
1. There is going to be a chance of showers and thunderstorms today until 9 p.m., but we should have at least partly-sunny skies and a high of 81 degrees. 2. The Marlborough Public Library's mission is to "create a community meeting house where citizens of all ages are free to gather and pursue common educational, cultural and recreational interests." In 2010, they certainly accomplished that goal of bringing the community together. Here are the numbers according to the 2010 annual report: 182,041 items were circulated. 1,608 museum passes were used. 280 programs were presented by the library's staff. 3,290 people attended programs at the library. 9,579 materials were to the library's collection. 26,888 individual uses of library computers were recorded. The return of summertime often evokes childhood memories of long, lazy days spent bicycling, hiking, or, especially for those of us lucky enough to have grown up in Massachusetts, relaxing by the beach. Yet for inner-city children in hot, crowded apartment buildings, summer fun is a luxury that many can not take part in. However, thanks to the Fresh Air Fund's Friendly Town Program, people across the Northeast, such as Marlborough's Karen and Patrick Lee, have chosen to open their doors for several weeks each summer to underprivileged kids from New York City, so that they may develop enduing memories of summers spent outdoors, which city life cannot offer. A redistricting meeting at Framingham State University Saturday gave community members a chance to give their opinions on who will represent them in congress and in the state house.
Local lawmakers gathered Saturday for a redistricting hearing at Framingham State University to talk about the future of Massachusetts' Congressional districts. Attendees were able to ask questions of the Special Joint Committee on Redistricting, of which State Senator Karen Spilka serves on it. Saturday's meeting, which took place while close to a million people were in Boston celebrating the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup, was one of several meetings being held throughout the state. This was the only meeting in the MetroWest area. The next scheduled meeting is in Boston in July. Committee leaders said new redsitricting lines should be in effect by September 2011.
