A joint committee on housing advances a $1.4 billion housing bond bill.
A housing bond bill that was approved Tuesday would funnel $1.4 billion to provide essential housing production and programs for low-income and moderate-income residents in the Bay State. "I am pleased to help advance this bill in the legislature to ensure that we continue to invest in a pipeline of housing initiatives and programs that address the most pressing housing needs of the Commonwealth,” said Senator Eldridge, D-Acton. An Act Financing the Production and Preservation of Housing for Low and Moderate Income Residents would authorize a $1.4 billion five year capital plan. $500 million will be directed to public housing modernization that would bring public housing units online. With the Zoning Board of Appeals set to continue a public hearing on the "Brookview Village" development tonight; we have all the information to get you up to date.
The proposed "Brookview Village" housing development public hearing will continue tonight in front of the Zoning Board of Appeals. The details that have been laid out about the complex are straight forward enough: it will include 243 rental units on an 18.73 acre plot of land along Route 20 near Ames Street. The development would be on land zoned for industrial use. However, the concerns of neighbors, and city councilors have already begun to be officially voiced with continued concerns set to be raised in a continueation of the August 7 hearing. The City Council Urban Affairs Subcommittee will soon consider a change in the definition of "affordable housing units" as it pertains to developers who build rental apartments or single family subdivisions within the city. Currently, the city is obligated to maintain an inventory of 10 percent of affordable housing units as defined by the state Dept. of Housing and Community Development's Subsidized Housing Inventory. According to attorney Arthur Bergeron of 53 Red Spring Road, two changes are in order. The first change stipulates that for any future housing developments within the city, 15 percent of the total units must be designated as "affordable housing units" and be counted in the state's Subsidized Housing Inventory.
