Have We Become Too Complacent?

The events following the Boston Marathon bombing reminded Americans that we are still vulnerable.

Wear a bullet proof vest on the days that the alert was orange or red? Look closer at other travelers on the train? Prepare a will? Still, we were on alert, even if that simply meant ... aware, and nervous that "something could happen." As time distanced us from the 9/11 attacks, the sense of concern that another attack like that could happen seemed to dissipate. With the Boston Marathon bombing, subsequent death of one suspect and capture of …

9/11 Remembered with 3,000 Flags

September 11 memorial designed to remind and prompt education with 3,000 flags.

Flags have been up all weekend on the lawn in front of the Walker Building to inspire, remind and prompt education on the 11th anniversary of September 11. "I think this is the equivalent, if not even greater considering that terrorism came home and war was brought to us ... we need to make sure we are remembering it every single year." The flags were carefully placed by volunteers on Friday in time for rush hour and a weekend of rememberance, he said. "We have had people there coming and going all weekend," said Seymour. "We have …

City to Set Aside More Affordable Housing; Thanks Seymour for Initiating 9/11 Observance

Proposed change will set aside 15 percent of new housing units as affordable, and the community unites to remember victims and survivors with moving tribute featuring 3,000 flags.

The City Council Urban Affairs Subcommittee will soon consider a change in the definition of "affordable housing units" as it pertains to developers who build rental apartments or single family subdivisions within the city. Currently, the city is obligated to maintain an inventory of 10 percent of affordable housing units as defined by the state Dept. of Housing and Community Development's Subsidized Housing Inventory. According to attorney Arthur Bergeron of 53 Red Spring Road, two changes are in order. The first change stipulates that for any future housing developments within the city, 15 percent of the total units must be designated as "affordable housing units" and be counted in the state's Subsidized Housing Inventory.
