Oh My: Patient Makes Fashion Statement; Fox Acts 'Out of Character'

We report the odd police-related news from the region.

Mario Kart? A man called Hopkinton Police this week to report that another driver threw trash out of his car window. The caller said he honked his horn, and in return, was given the finger. An officer spoke with the alleged litterbug, who said he had just tossed a banana peel. Unlike the video game Mario Kart, this did not result in any nearby cars spiraling out of control. It's free and comfortable; why wouldn't you wear it? A woman called Milford police to report her daughter was discharged from the hospital, but had gone to a relative's workplace still wearing the hospital gown. She reported her daughter might still be walking around Main Street with the johnny. I know this fox, and he never acts this way. A Northborough resident …

Flags are at half staff today to honor fallen Peace Officers.

An eagle-eyed Patch reader noticed that flags at Marlborough City Hall and other public buildings are flying at half-staff and inquired as to why.  The answer: It's Peace Officer's Memorial Day.  President Obama set May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and also designated the week of May 13 through May 19 week as Police Week. In doing so, he called on all governors to order flags to fly at half staff and encouraged all business and homeowners to follow suit.  The commemoration actually dates to the early 1960s. President John F. Kennedy signed a law setting aside May 15 to honor fallen police officers and President Bill Clinton expanded the commemoration to include flying flags at half-staff.  In Washington, D.C., the day was marked at …

You Ask, Patch Answers: Seatbelt Enforcement

Patch readers inquired about seat belt enforcement. Here's the lowdown.

When the Marlborough Police Department announced they'd take part in the statewide Click it Or Ticket Campaign earlier this month, some Patch readers wondered whether police are able to stop drivers for not wearing their seat belts. The answer is no, but with an important caveat, said Marlborough Police Det. Scott DeCiero.  Massachusetts' seat belt law is subject to secondary enforcement only, meaning officers can only write tickets to drivers or adult passengers if they've already been stopped for another offense.  "However, if we see a child under the age of 12 without a seatbelt or a child seat, we can stop that vehicle,"  DeCeiero said.
