Highland City Striders Update (Running Club ~ 4/6/2014)

Good morning Striders,

This week we are pleased to welcome Daniel Sullivan from Westborough and Judy Proteau fromMarlborough as our newest Highland City Striders!

Please find attached our April running schedule and also consider coming out and running with us.  If you would like to be paired with someone, please send me a note with your nominal 5K / 10K time.  It is always more beneficial to run with someone – they keep you going when you want to stop!  This schedule is also available on our website – thank you Larry and thanks to April for making the schedule!!

It’s tomorrow night!  We are planning an HCS invasion of the Grey Hound Pub at 139 Water St in Worcester tomorrow night at 6:30 PM (Kelley Square exit on 290) for their weekly Monday night run. For the uninitiated, this is a self-timed 3 mile jaunt through Downtown Worcester with a pot luck and pints to follow.  There, we will meet up with our friends from the Central Mass Striders.  The run starts at 6:30 and the car pool will depart the Hudson Stop & Shop at 5:45. I will collect $5 from participants so we can provide pizza for the potluck or alternatively, you can bring a dish to share.

Good luck to Liz Masterjohn who is doing a 50K trail race today and Amanda Brandt and Rebecca Strait who are dong half marathons today.

Our Boston Marathon Runnahs.  I would like to just give a shout out to our HCS Boston Marathon runners.  They have worked very hard to get the miles in under some pretty tough winter conditions.   You can track them using the athlete tracker at baa.org and plugging in their bib number.  Several of them are also doing TVFRs 15K tuneup race this in Upton this weekend as their final rally before they start the tapering.  Good luck to you all.  We salute you and we are also very proud of your accomplishment!  If I have missed anyone, my apologies – please let me know if you will be running.

Maria Benway - 31407

Gary Cattarin - 1980

Sharon Foster - 27670

Sarah Friedman - 31823

Dave Kittredge - 33217

Issam Kreiche - 4114

Dan Milton - 25429

Many runners raise funds on behalf of a sponsor.  Maria and Sarah have a fund raising page atgofundme.com/runningforro.com.  When you get to the page, put “Benway” in the search box.   They are running for their friend Roseann who was injured in last year’s Boston Marathon.  You can see Maria’s interview with WMCT here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7dyl_1jp_A&list=UU5CYAISsuVfTiKqYg3qilfw .  These amazing ladies have raised over $23,000 towards their goal of $30,000. Wow!

Thanks to all of you who supported Sharon with her fundraiser at Bertucci’s last Wednesday.  Sharon is running the Boston Marathon this year with Team in Training to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).   As a 10+ year leukemia survivor, Sharon is running to raise critical funds for research and treatment to help other have the same great outcome she has.  If you are interested in contributing you can donation online at http://pages.teamintraining.org/ma/boston14/sgf726; if you would prefer to contribute via check; checks can be made payable to LLS and mailed to her at 15 Falls Brook Road, Hudson, MA 01749.

Thank you in advance for sharing your blessings with our HCS runners!  These are some very worthwhile causes.

Congrats to the team who ran the 15K Boston Tune-up Race in Upton yesterday.

Clinton Tribute Road Race – 5 miler.  Folks, one of my favorite races is the Clinton Tribute Road Race that this year will be held on Saturday, May 10th.  This race is in our race series.  What makes this race so good?  First of all, it is very challenging.  It features the “hill from hell” at Mile 3.  This hill brought me to my knees last year and this year I am determined not to walk on that hill!  Second, there is a wonderful post race party at the Old Timers Saloon after the race.  We usually have a nice crowd that goes and so this is the fun part of the day.  Attached is a sign up form.  Please consider coming out and running this race.  It is cheap and also very fun!

You’re a Strider and now you want to look like one.  We are working on developing an “on-line store” with a local vendor in Marlborough so that you will be able to get your HCS gear for your participation in Spring and Summer races.  Stayed tuned – we’re getting close here!  Thank you Donna!!

Couch to 5K program.  HCS member Bill Schade is leading a Couch to 5K group on weekday evenings at 6PM on the Rail Trail near the parking lot for Kelleher Field in Marlborough.  This program is sponsored by the fine folk at the Connecting Point Church in Marlboro.  If you are interested in learning more about it for a friend, or volunteering to help lead group workouts, please contact Bill at bill.schade@comcast.net. Bill is always looking for folk to help out.  Please consider joining Bill help others get off their couch and get healthy!  If you know of someone who might benefit from this program, they can register here.  Get the 411 here

Spirit of Hudson 6K Road Race – Saturday, June 7th, 8:30 AM.  Folks, we are gearing up for our first race of the season and I know you are all just dying to know how you can help:

·        Wanna join our 40 person race crew?  Please send a note to Monica Burnett at Monica.burnett84@gmail.com

·        If you know of a business that would like to sponsor the race and have their name on the back of our race jerseys, please contact April Ropes at aropes@verizon.net.  We have sponsor forms up on the website right here.

·        Wanna run this chip timed, flat, fast race course and establish your PR for a 6K, then you can register right here.

·        100% of the proceeds of this race will go to the Elks Scholarship Fund, providing educational stipends for college bound seniors from the four local area high schools.

·        Thanks in advance for your help – we do appreciate it.

Striders “Spring Training”.  Just a reminder that we have our Striders Spring Training program running on Tuesdays and Thursdays and track workouts on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM.  Thanks very much to Danny Milton, Sharon Foster, & Dave Kittredge for organizing these runs.

Tuesday:  The “Danny Milton Experience” – 47 O’Neil St, Hudson

Wednesday:  Sharon’s Need for Speed Workout – HHS Track

Thursday:  “Hills are your Friends” with Dave K.  – 34 Seneca Dr, Hudson

 Thought for the week:

If see you a policeman or fireman this week, go shake their hand and say thank you.  Remember that these folk put their life on the line every day of the week on our behalf and I certainly appreciate that somebody took the time to paint the rock on the Hudson / Marlborough border and remind us of that fact.

Have a great week of running

  Regards,

  Jim
