Highland City Striders Update (local running club) 4/13/14

Good morning Striders,

This week we are pleased to welcome Mercedes Beyna from Stow as our newest Highland City Strider!,  Great crowd yesterday for the Saturday morning run!  Next Saturday morning, we are at Ghiloni Park at  8 AM.

Congratulations to Liz Masterjohn, the first of the uber awesome buffalos to complete a 50K (31.42 miles) trail race on the Vermont – New Hampshire border last weekend (Twin States 50K).  It was just a little hilly as you can see from the profile off her Garmin watch.  Almost downright frightening! In her own words:

“The uphills were just as relentless as the downhills and they never stopped. Luckily all those hills lead to some pretty amazing views so I was not short of distractions during the race. We started early with the 50-miler group. This was a Fatass so there were no frills. Food was supplied by the runners and a couple generous volunteers who met up with us on the course for an aid stations, otherwise you brought what you needed and just ran. The RD was nice enough to have a real timer so we were able to record our finish times. The RD also ended up running the 50M and blew by us as we approached mile 2 or 3 and came in first for the 50M (6:58:16). To put that in perspective, I finished the 50k (~31 miles) in 5:31:15.  I ended up wearing my Fuel Belt and used the Tailwind (electrolytes + calories) for hydration and had ~400 calories in other assorted foods along the course. The ground was dry and somewhat frozen at the start (28F) but softened up quickly as the sun came up turning the road into a squishy, muddy mess. The gaiters did their job and kept the dirt, mud and stones out of my shoes. Overall I had a great race and finished with a smile on my face. Hopefully the June (50 mile) race will go just as well!”  Wow!!  We have a few more overachievers running a 50K trail race this month, so stayed tuned for more stories!

Congratulations to Amanda Brandt who ran her (hilly) half marathon at the Great Bay Half in New Market, NH in 1:54:22 and got a PR buy over 2 minutes in the process.  Way to go Amanda!

Our Boston Marathon Runnahs.  I would like to just give a shout out to our HCS Boston Marathon runners.  They have worked very hard to get the miles in under some pretty tough winter conditions.   You can track them using the athlete tracker at baa.org and plugging in their bib number.  Good luck to you all.  We salute you and we are also very proud of your accomplishment!  If I have missed anyone, my apologies – please let me know if you will be running.

Many runners raise funds on behalf of a sponsor.  Maria and Sarah have a fund raising page atgofundme.com/runningforro.com.  When you get to the page, put “Benway” in the search box.   They are running for their friend Roseann who was injured in last year’s Boston Marathon.  You can see Maria’s interview with WMCT here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7dyl_1jp_A&list=UU5CYAISsuVfTiKqYg3qilfw .  These amazing ladies have raised over $30,000 and have met their goal!.Wow!

Sharon Foster is running the Boston Marathon this year with Team in Training to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).   As a 10+ year leukemia survivor, Sharon is running to raise critical funds for research and treatment to help other have the same great outcome she has.  If you are interested in contributing you can donation online at http://pages.teamintraining.org/ma/boston14/sgf726; if you would prefer to contribute via check; checks can be made payable to LLS and mailed to her at 15 Falls Brook Road, Hudson, MA 01749.

Congratulations to Mike Peckham who is one of only 12 people on the entire planet to receive a Boston Marathon bib, running in honor of  the Lt Walsh / FF Kennedy Memorial Fund.  BAA provided 12 bibs to the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts.  He is working hard to raise $2,000.00 in the next week.  If you would like to help, you can make out a check to the Lt Walsh / FF Kennedy Memorial Fund.

Thank you in advance for sharing your blessings with our HCS runners!  These are some very worthwhile causes.
