Highland City Striders Update (3/9/14)

Good morning Striders,

This week, we are pleased to welcome Deborah Garner from Northborough as our newest Highland City Strider!

Our HCS Annual “Family Meeting” is this Wednesday, March 12th at 6:30PM at the Elks Lodge at 99 Park St in Hudson.  Sending out an outlook calendar notice had some mixed results – sorry to those of you with Comcast accounts that got a blank note.

We will be having pasta & salad catered in.  Please send in an RSVP today with a headcount so we know how much food to order – thank you very much.   If you already sent a note back, no need to respond again.  In preparation for that meeting, HCS Race series director Eric Hoffman, has put together a survey so that we can create a new and improved HCS Race Series program for 2014.  You can take this short survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FXZZ8R3.  HCS race series participants have a chance to win the coveted jacket (like the one 2012 HCS Race Series Champion Danny Milton is wearing below) or along sleeve HCS Race series tech shirt. Survey results will be announced on Wednesday.

Congratulations to Danny Milton and Mike Peckham who did the Stu’s 30K – a course not for the faint of heart.  In addition, Beth Dougherty’s team of Iron Maidens, each running 15K, placed third overall in the relay.  Finally, Karen Patalano made her way thru 15K.  Outstanding job!!

Congratulations to Amanda Brandt who ran a 23:15 and was the age group medalist yesterday at the Michael McCaffrey Hope Challenge 5K in Shrewsbury.  Last year, Amanda’s goal was to bust 24 minutes.  Guess she laid waste to that goal!  Oh yeah Amanda – way to go!!

Good luck to those running the Celtic 5K in Woostah today.  Speaking of Woostah, in about three weeks, we will be making our way down for a Monday night “urban run” with our CMS friends at the Greyhound in Kelley Square again.  Stay tuned for details.  This is much more fun now that it is daylight savings.

For those of you running the Ras na hEirea  U.S.A. 5Km next weekend, we will meet up at the corner of Chester & Elm at the Dunkin Donuts (where else would we possibly be???) between 10:30 & 10:45 for a team picture.  Race starts at 11.  If this is your first time, go early so you can get a decent parking spot. Maybe see you at the Joshua Tree post race……….

St Patrick’s Day 3.17 Mile Fun Run.  Also, please plan on joining us on Monday, March 17th at 5:30 PM for our annual St Patrick’s Day Fun Run at Finnegan’s Pub.  This is not a road race – it is a group run, where we all run together.  Finnegan’s Pub will be giving out a prize to the “Most Irish Looking”.  At left is Stanley O’Keilbowicz, one of our past winners!  So, with this in mind, be sure to come with your orange or your green.  It is a triathlon of sorts – a little runnin’, a little singin’, and a little hoistin!!  We’ll gather at Finnegan’s after the run and listen to some authentic Irish music.  This is an HCS Camaraderie Event.

Introducing the Spirit of Hudson 6K Road Race – Saturday, June 7th in conjunction with the annual Hudson Community Festival.  Please consider sharing your talents and joining as a member of our 40 person race day crew to help us make this year’s race the best one yet.  Because of the generosity of our members, HCS has been able to provide over $30K in local community support over the past five years.  If you are interested, please send a note back.  For those of you with young children, this race features a Mighty Mite Marathon – (26.2 yards or so)for kids aged 2 to 6.  Get the 411 on this race and sign up at http://www.highlandcitystriders.org/SpiritofHudson.html.  Thanks in advance!

Couch to 5K program.  HCS member Bill Schade will be leading a Couch to 5K group again this spring, starting on March 24th on the Rail Trail near the parking lot for Kelleher Field in Marlborough (as long as the snow is gone).  This program is sponsored by the fine folk at the Connecting Point Church in Marlboro.  If you are interested in learning more about it for a friend, or volunteering to help lead group workouts, please contact Bill at bill.schade@comcast.net. Bill is always looking for folk to help out.  Please consider joining Bill help others get off their couch and get healthy!  If you know of someone who might benefit from this program, they can register here

Striders “Spring Training”.  Just a reminder that we have our Striders Spring Training program running on Tuesdays and Thursdays and track workouts on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM.  Thanks very much to Danny Milton, Sharon Foster, & Dave Kittredge for organizing these runs.

Tuesday:  The Danny Milton Experience – 47 O’Neil St, Hudson

Wednesday:  Sharon’s Need for Speed Workout – HHS Track
Thursday:  Hills are your Friends with Dave K.  – 34 Seneca Dr, Hudson

We have a group of overachievers who are targeting a 50K trail race April and a 50 mile trail race in June.  They do some serious miles (at a conversational pace) on the weekends.  If you are interested in challenging yourself to one of these runs, or you would like to join this herd of amazing folks in one of their training runs –see their facebook page athttps://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/429989967133637/.  A word of caution though – if you want to run with these folks, you will need to upgrade your OS to Beastmode 3.0 – comes with boatloads of attitude and focus!

Mooo!!!!!!

Thought for the week:

8 more shopping days ‘til Irish Christmas!  Have a great week of running

Regards,

Jim
