Highland City Striders Update (3/23/14)

Good morning Striders,

Thanks to all who showed up for our little celebration of Irish Christmas on Monday. The lads & lasses did a great job singing the songs.  I dunno – maybe we should go on tour or something!  It was very difficult picking out the winner of the“Most Irish Looking Contest”.  There were several folk who made a good bid here. Stanley O’Kielbowicz completely outdid himself once again.  But alas, it was Daniel O’Sambuchi with his “Mick for a Day” costume who pulled out the win.  Thanks to the folks at Finnegan’s Pub for the very generous gift bag for the winner.  We had a couple of fines lasses at the pub that kept the 12 year old Tullemore Dews flowing!  Goodness gracious, there are only 43 more shopping days ‘til the next Irish Holiday - Cinque O’Demaio – celebrating that famous Irishman who lived in Nicaragua……but that is another story for another day………Slainte!!

Congratulations to the folk who ran the Ras na hEireann U.S.A. 5Km last Sunday. Todd & Liz have run this race every year since its inception in 2003.  I was proud to run with my two sons who were honorary HCS for the day.   And speaking of sons, Mark Vital’s son William was the medalist and the BIG DOGat the On the Rocks 5K in Lunenberg last Sunday.  Way to go William!!  Finally, we had 4 folk who braved the elements (and the hills!) in the Ashland Half.  Last Sunday was a little cold!  Great job to you all for getting out there and getting it done!

From our inbox this week – I think this would be a wonderful idea to get several of us to run one of the stages together:

My name is Jamie Hay and I'm part of a non-stop running relay from LA to Boston in aid of the Boston bombing survivors. The relay is called One Run For Boston.  After the devastating events of the 2013 Boston Marathon myself and two friends decided to organize a running event that would show how strong the human spirit is and unite runners across America.  One Run For Boston started as a grassroots movement and after successfully completing the relay with over 2,000 runners last summer, fundraising $91,000, we've organized the event again. This time we hope to raise $1 million for the survivors.

To achieve that we need 4,000 participants to fundraise an average of $250 each. At present we have 1,520 participants and so far raised $230,000 for the survivors.  I'm contacting you to ask for your support - can you help us raise awareness of this event to the Massachusetts running community?  Please visit our website to discover more about the relay - http://www.onerunforboston.org/  View the stages in Massachusetts - http://www.onerunforboston.org/stages/MA/

Thank you for your time!
