Olympic Gold Medalist Teaches In Marlborough

Students get latest techniques from abroad.

An Olympic gold medalist and five time world field hockey player of the year was in Marlborough recently to teach international techniques to local athletes.

"To really succeed you have to go international with your coaching," said Dan Welty the coach of the Spiders Field Hockey club who organized the clinic at Fore Kicks in Marlborough.

Australian Gold Medalist Jamie Dwyer was able to give the players tips on strategy based on the latest thinking internationally, he said. This current knowledge combined with the athletes ability to inspire the student athletes.

"My goal for this kind of session is that they are really inspired by these guys," said Welty of Dwyer and his teammate Mark Knowles.

Welty hopes to have the players attend another clinic in the future. Having premiere male players teach the clinic also shows the extent of the sport to the female high school players, he said.

"It just adds another layer to that it is an international sport," said Welty.

Players from Marlborough, Northborough, Southborough, the nashoba area, Holliston, Holden and Keene New Hampshire participated in the clinics.
