Whitcomb Student Takes 1st, School Receives Commendation for Math Competition

Other Marlborough students received recognition for scores of 12 or greater.

You can officially call Whitcomb Middle School seventh-grader Ben Patterson a math whiz.

Patterson earned the highest score among more than 200 of his Whitcomb peers on the recent American Mathematics Competition (AMC).

The AMC is a highly challenging math competition based on both power and speed. For more than 60 years, this nationwide exam has challenged students to put their best math foot forward, competing with more than 350,000 students across the country.

On Feb. 28, Patterson and 54 of his fellow Whitcomb students were presented with awards for outstanding performance in the competition. Additionally, the school received a certificate of merit for having the top three scorers earn a collective 50 points or more. It is the first time in more than 5 years that the school has received this commendation.

Total points on the test are 25. Patterson scored a remarkable 19 points. Fifth-grader Shane Ferrante scored 18, and eighth-graders Adam Moore, Sarah Zagzoug and Bailey Honerchavez each scored 16.

Patterson and Ferrante also received certificates of honor for scoring in the top 5 percent worldwide, and Ferrante received a certificate of achievement because his score was above 15 and he is a fifth-grader.

  • Eighth-graders Thomas Adamson, Haylee Braga, Gabriel Dearaujo, Igor Demoraes, Gregory Demos, Heidi Dipersio, Leeor Harel, Jack Hathaway, Marty Isaacson, Brian Oram, Yago Souza, Andriy Tashchuk, Austin Wise.
