Dedication, committment and training came together to allow local student Marisa O'Gara to skate competitively at Lake Placid.

At the end of January, O’Gara of the Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School traveled to Lake Placid, NY to participate in the 2013 Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships. Around 2,000 skaters from across the eastern United States competed at several levels of competition, including novice, intermediate, junior, senior, and collegiate. The event was a qualifier for the 2013 U.S.

Synchronized Skating Championships, where the top skating teams from across the country will be competing against one another.

Team Excel of Boston was one of the 150 teams at the competition. Marisa competed as a member of Excel’s new intermediate team. To qualify for the competition, all skaters on an intermediate team must be under the age of eighteen, and they need to pass a “moves-in-the-field” test. Although the members of Excel’s intermediate team just began to skate together this year, they were able to place sixth out of fourteen teams.

Marisa began skating at the age of four, and over the past five years, she has started to skate competitively. Marisa practices with Team Excel for eight hours a week, and between her ice dance and freestyle lessons, she skates for an additional four hours a week on her own. Because of her dedication to synchronized skating, Marisa does not participate in individual competitions.
