UPDATED: School Committee to Address Graduation Attendance

The special meeting will also take up a recent vote of no-confidence in the superintendent.

UPDATE: Wednesday, 7 a.m.: This special meeting of the school committee, originally scheduled for Wednesday, has been moved to Thursday at 5 p.m.

Whether the superintendent will attend the upcoming high school graduation will be one of  the topics the Marlborough School Committee will tackle when it holds a special meeting Thursday afternoon.

Last week, a group of seniors asked Superintendent Anthony Pope to consider not attending the graduation ceremony on Sunday, June 3. The students told Pope that given , they worried that his presence would be a distraction.

Superintendents typically take an active role in graduation ceremonies, often handing students diplomas or serving in other official roles.

The school board is also expected to take up the issue of the recent vote of no-confidence in Pope taken by the Marlborough Educators’ Association, the local teachers’ union.

The committee meets at the District Education Center.

At its last meeting,. The board also said that Pope and other staffers would be offered conflict resolution training in coming weeks.

Students have said Pope behaved unprofessionally when he visited Marlborough High School on Jan. 27. A staffer also claimed Pope pushed her that day, but both Marlborough police and a clerk magistrate at declined to pursue criminal charges against the superintendent.

I think that the School Committee should listen to the parents and taxpayers of this city concerning this Superintendent. If he is not wanted at graduation or any other school activities then doesn't that say something!

If Pope has any kind of respect for the 2012 graduating class he would not attend.

It seems like something is afoot in Marlborough. Old political allies teaming together again (Hogan & Leduc) to distract people from what occurred. The Superintendent assaulted a teacher by pushing her, yet no charges were allowed to be filed. Funny that the Magistrate (Leduc) is so close with Hogan in his support of Pope. This is just another example of the Democratic Party covering for one of it's own. Leduc should have recused himself due to a conflict of interest. Pope said he was just going to scare the students. The week the sit in occurred was bullying week. What was Pope doing but attempting to bully these children/young adults. Nice example being set by a "responsible" adult. Also a nice message sent by the Magistrate that bullying will be tolerated depending on your politics, position and color.
