Panthers run past Westborough, shut-out Rangers 36-0

The Panthers running attack was too much for the Rangers to handle as Marlborough defeated Westborough 36 - 0 in a Mid-Wach B contest at Kelleher Field.

Marlborough received all the offense it needed from Austin Garvey, Alex Tello and Paul Goulet as the Panthers ran past the Westborough Rangers 36 – 0 in a Mid-Wach B contest at Kelleher Field. The Panthers (6-3) compiled over 300 yards of offense on the ground while their defense held the Rangers (1-8) to only 157 total yards of offense.

did not waste anytime finding the end zone. Just over two minutes into the game, Tello capped off a Panthers drive with a 38-yard touchdown run.  The Panthers opening possession was a four play, 65-yard drive that lasted only 2:14. Tello added another touchdown, this one a five yard run, with just over a minute to play in the first quarter.

“It was my senior night and I had to run hard. I got two touchdowns and converted my extra points,” said Tello, who is also the Panthers place kicker. “We’re going to work hard and hopefully win our last two games against Leominster and Hudson.”

The Panthers continued to control time of possession in the second quarter and added two more scores before halftime. Both Garvey and Goulet found the end zone on running plays, giving Marlborough a 28 – 0 lead at the half.

Garvey added another touchdown, this one a seven-yard run, with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter. Garvey finished the night with 11 rushes for 107 yards. Tello converted a two-point conversion attempt, giving the Panthers a 36 – 0 lead.

The Rangers were led offensively by quarterback Dan Orlando, who excelled in the passing game, completing 7-15 passes for 58 yards. His favorite target, Kevin Sanders, caught three passes for 26 yards, both game highs. The Rangers threatened to score on a couple drives, but the Panthers “bend, don’t break” defense twice stopped Westborough drives in their own red zone.

“We executed, the offensive line played well and the running backs had room. Defensively, we gave them some yards but when they got in tight we stopped them,” said Marlborough Head Coach Sean Mahoney. “Garvey is a great threat, running the option and making the right reads. And most importantly he’s protecting the ball.”

Marlborough will take their three game winning streak into Leominster next week when they face the Blue Devils Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. Westborough will look to rebound at home against the Auburn Rockets Saturday, Nov. 12.
