UPDATED: Math and Science Academy Walks to Support Food Pantries

A local teacher at the Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School (AMSA) will be holding a fundraising event for local food banks this Saturday, and is looking for volunteers to join him, or donate cans of food.

Mark Vital, an English and world literature teacher at the here in Marlborough, is preparing to stage the school's first "10,000 Can March" event, an endeavor to raise awareness and supplies for local food pantries.

Those walking in the event this Saturday, April 30, are asking sponsors to commit cans of food, rather than money, that will be donated to the pantries. The walk begins at 10 a.m. at the Yawkey Sports Training Center here in Marlborough.

“There are two main reasons that I wanted to hold this event,” Vital said in a news release. “First to fill the shelves of the three food pantries, in Marlborough, Clinton, and Hudson. No one should go hungry. I expect for each participant to be able to complete 10 miles in the three hour period. This event is an efficient way to establish and foster a community here within AMSA, and is an excellent way for families to step out from the sidelines and be active participants in a school-wide event.”

Over the past six years, Vital has held 10 mile walks to raise money for these food banks, and has asked people to pledge cans of food rather than money. Over this period of time, Vital has accumulated close to 1000 cans for each event.

Local students have also participated in these past events as well.

"The pain of walking 10 miles isn’t anything compared to the pain of having to go and ask for food," said Priy Santikary, a sixth grader at AMSA. “ It’s a good idea and I’m glad to make a difference.”
