Marlborough Uses Late Offensive Surge to Defeat Quabbin 4-1

The Marlborough Panthers scored three goals in the final eight minutes, including two from Jose Saquich, to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the Quabbin Panthers in a Mid-Wach B match at Vital Field.

The found the back of the net three times in the final eight minutes of the game to defeat the Quabbin Panthers 4-1 in a Mid-Wach B contest at Vital Field in Marlborough. Marlborough received goals from Armando Canela, Jose Saquich (2) and Jorge Ayala while Quabbin saw their lone goal come from Casey Bieksha. This was the second time these teams have met this season, with Marlborough also winning the first match 3-0 at Quabbin’s home field.

The Panthers of Marlborough came out with their legs moving and carried the tempo to begin the match, nearly converting on numerous chances and keeping the ball in Quabbin’s defensive third of the field. Marlborough’s offensive pressure was finally rewarded in the 27th minute when Canela took a direct free kick just outside the 18’ that found its way past Quabbin keeper Brandon Midura, giving Marlborough a 1-0 lead. Despite many more chances, the first half ended without any more scoring.

Quabbin regrouped during half-time and started to apply pressure to the Marlborough defense and keeper to start the second half. After a few shots rang off the post and a couple near misses by both teams, Quabbin was able to tie the game with about twenty minutes left. Off of a corner, the ball kicked out to Bieksa who fired a shot past Marlborough keeper Justin Turnbow.

“This was one of the best efforts we put forth all year. The first game we played against them we lost 3-0 and they dominated us,” said Quabbin Head Coach Rick Lindsten. “Today we made a game out of it in the second half, just had a few unlucky bounces.”

Despite Quabbin upping the offensive pressure, Marlborough weathered the storm. Marlborough Coach Steve Bishop decided to move Saquich from midfield to striker with about fifteen minutes left, and the team saw instant results.

“Jose is a offensive minded player, we move him out of the midfield and move him up top sometimes,” said Marlborough Head Coach Steve Bishop. “This allows us to move Gabriel Gomes-Perriera into the midfield to add more aggressiveness to our midfield.”

Saquich scored twice in the final eight minutes, with Ayala also scoring in-between the two Saquich goals. “We gave it our all, we knew we had to come back after giving up the tying goal,” said Jose Saquich. “Coach put me up top and told me I had to finish, and as a captain I couldn’t let my team down.”

Marlborough will look to build off this victory on Thursday, Oct. 13 when they travel to Nashoba to take on the Chieftains.
