Merk started wrestling in third grade, then stopped around sixth grade to pursue winter sports such as skiing. He returned to wrestling in the folk style used by most high schools in the eighth grade.

When asked what he loved most about the sport, he was clear. "I guess it would be the fact that it is an individual sport, but you have the support of a team behind you as well. When you go out there it's just you, but you have the whole team around you, and they support you and you can support them."

What's next: Merk has been accepted to the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, and has applied to several other schools as well. His major will based on which school he attends, he said. "I'll definitely look into wrestling in college," he added.

Highlight: Beginning in his junior year he started wrestling in tournaments. He earned first place in a Marlborough hosted championship, and has been a top contender in many other competitions as well.
