Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School will square off with Melrose-based Mystic Valley Regional Charter School on Saturday during the preliminary round of WGBH's "High School Quiz Show" state tournament.

Advance Math, which has students from Marlborough and surrounding communities, and Mystic Valley, which pulls from the Melrose area, will compete against one another starting at 9:15 a.m. Jan. 25 and the show will be taped live in front of a studio audience at the WGBH Studios in Brighton. The contest will be one of four taped that day, with another four matches recorded on Sunday, Jan. 26.

The schools are among 16 to advance from a pool of nearly 100 Massachusetts schools, according to a press statement.

"This year’s field includes four schools new to the tournament, one past champion, and one school that has earned a place in the 'Sweet Sixteen' for all five seasons," reads a press statement.

"High School Quiz Show" aligns with the Massachusetts high school curriculum standards in subjects that include literature, history, science and math, as well as current events and general knowledge, reads a press statement. The program is endorsed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education, and The Princeton Review judges the televised competition and reviews the program’s questions.

Winners will advance to quarterfinal, semifinal and state championship rounds, which will be taped during the first week in February. The winner from Massachusetts will take on NHPTV's "Granite State Challenge" state champion from New Hampshire in the second annual Governor's Cup Challenge. The show is expected to be broadcast on WGBH 2 and NHPTV at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24 at the NHPTV studios in Durham, NH.

Billy Costa is the host of the award-winning "High School Quiz Show" program, and the new season will be broadcast at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8 on WGBH 2.
