2 Local Students Honored for Making a Difference

The Kennedy Presidential Library honored 100 middle school students from across the state recently, and two Marlborough students were among them.

Two Students from the here in Marlborough were honored last Wednesday at the Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston for "making a difference" through volunteering. 

Out of 100 middle school students recognized statewide, Lindsay Mulligan and Hailey Parsons, both eighth graders, made the cut for their charitable work in the community that included Haiti relief efforts, volunteering for the Special Olympics, and work in the Clinton Soup Kitchen projects. 

"Both girls have been active members  providing outstanding contributions to programs such as raising $4,000 for the Haiti relief, working with the local chapter of Special Olympics, and providing lunches to the volunteers building homes for the Habitat for Humanity program to name a few," said Maureen Evans, Director of Student Leadership Program at AMSA. "These students are a pleasure to work with, their ideas are endless, and their commitment to leading by example outstanding. We are very proud of them."

A press release from the Kennedy Library and Museum said the "Make a Difference award is given to students who are nominated by a teacher or principal for an outstanding contribution they have made to their school, neighborhood, town, or the global community.

After traveling to Boston on Wednesday, Mulligan and Parsons received a personalized certificate recognizing their work on the projects for which they were nominated, and heard encouraging words from Massachusetts state treasurer Steve Grossman, as well as several others.

"President Kennedy believed that every person can make a difference and each of us should try," said library director Tom Putnam. "These students are an inspiring example of JFK's timeless call to service."
