Widespread Blackout in Marlborough, Shelter Loses Power

Forecasters are predicting the peak wind speeds from Hurricane Irene to occur between 2 and 6 p.m. Sunday.

As of 1 p.m. Sunday, the majority of Marlborough seemed to be without electrical power due to the high winds and heavy rains of Hurricane Irene. 

The emergency shelter at established by ' office has reportedly lost power due to a malfunction with the generator. City officials along with MEMA are looking for alternative options, one of which may be the  

National Grid's website is saying that thousands of Marlborough customers are without power. A graph displayed suggests (as does a drive around the city) that an excess of 20,000 customers may be without power.

and work crews out on the streets in downtown Marlborough were clearing large, fallen trees from the vicinity of power lines early Sunday afternoon. Portions of Elm and Millham streets were closed off, due to what one reader described as a large tree leaning against power lines. Department of Public Works crews were out in force installing temporary stop signs at intersections, due to the fact that street lights were not operational. 

As of this post, we were unaware of any serious injuries or major damage caused by Hurricane Irene.
