Weaver Says Opponent Called Him "Unethical" and "Unprofessional"

The Westford Republican said in a statement that he is disappointed that the Golnik campaign has cancelled a proposed debate in the Greater Lawrence area.

With time running out before the Sept. 6 GOP Primary, tensions are flaring between the campaigns of Tom Weaver and Jon Golnik in the race to see who will face Niki Tsongas this fall for the Massachusetts Third Congressional District seat. Marlborough will be included in the district following the election.

Although the two candidates met on Monday in a debate hosted by the Lowell Sun, the Weaver campaign has issued a statement saying that the Golnik campaign has called them “unethical” and “unprofessional,” cancelling a proposed debate in the Greater Lawrence area.

“I told my staff to post (on Facebook) that there was a radio debate with Tom Duggan (on) WCAP 980 AM, on Saturday (Aug. 4) between Jon Golnik and myself.” Weaver said. “I believe that it is important to let the public hear the candidates, we are asking to represent them. I am disappointed that my opponent chose not to attend.”

“If keeping my word and promise means that my campaign is ‘unprofessional and unethical’, then, so be it” said Weaver.  “I will always keep my word.”

Golnik campaign spokeswoman Alicia Preston told Patch that the Golnik campaign has been happy to commit to the three currently scheduled debates requested by the Weaver campaign, including Monday's debate.
