Weather Service Issues Notice in Advance of Expected Snowstorm

NOAA has issued a notice advising Marlborough and Central Massachusetts residents on an impending storm that could make driving dangerous late Thursday evening into Friday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a notice to many areas in southern New England, including the Marlborough area, advising residents of an upcoming extended period of bad weather.

Expected to begin sometime Thursday evening with snow that could leave several inches, the precipitation combined with the cold weather is expected to make area roads quite hazardous.

"Widespread snow showers are expected tonight across southern New England with snow accumulations of one or two inches likely," said a NOAA release. "Given the recent cold weather, roads will become snow covered and slippery quickly."

The Massachusetts State Police recently issued a statement advising drivers to be extra cautious during bad weather.

"Be mindful that wet, icy and snow-covered roads require increased stopping time," said police. "Motorists are advised to drive at speeds appropriate to the weather conditions, significantly slower than they would drive on dry roads, and to keep greater distance than normal between their cars and the cars in front of them. The rule of thumb for dry weather—one car length for every 10 miles per hour of speed—should be increased in inclement weather. Motorists should leave extra time to get to their destination, especially during tomorrow morning’s commute."

While a respite of partly-sunny skies and temperatures around the freezing mark is expected Friday afternoon, NOAA predicts another storm front will hit the area sometime Saturday.

"There is a moderate to high probability of accumulating snows Saturday across much of the region," said the release. "There is still some uncertainty as to the exact track of the storm, and how much cold air will remain entrenched over southern New England with warmer air over-running aloft. Therefore a wintry mix is also possible."
