Tsongas Stresses Importance of Connecting with Marlborough

As people filled the entryway to the Senior Center Tuesday night they were seeking the same thing: face time with Marlborough's U.S. Congresswoman Niki Tsongas (D-Lowell).

"A woman just came in to say hello and express her concerns across the board," said Congresswoman Tsongas who has done 70 Congress on Your Corner visits across the district. "We just hear across the board."

Every person who came to the event got the same treatment — a one-on-one meeting with their congressional representative. Marlborough is the third of 11 new communities in her district that the congresswoman has visited.

"We do represent a whole host of communities," said Congresswoman Tsongas.

She also met with local representatives, as she conducts a tour of the region she represents that now stretches from Lowell to Gardner. When she is not in Washington when congress is in session — which represents 40 percent of her time — she is in the district, said Congresswoman Tsongas.

"It is important to stay in touch with local officials because we have to work together to solve problems," said Congresswoman Tsongas. "When we are in Washington it is an intense series of days and when I am back in district, it is equally intense but very different."

She also stopped at a local start-up company, Qualtre, that is designing gyroscopes.

"They have grown and are up to about 25 employees. That is the opportunity for this district — those small start-ups," said Congresswoman Tsongas.

She would not say the next time she would visit the city for a Congress on Your Corner, but that she is in the final stages of signing a lease agreement for offices in the city.

“We will have a physical presence here," said Congresswoman Tsongas.
