Summer City Internship Program to Return

Roughly 20 internships in the city will be funded in the second year of the Public Service Internship Program.

The Finance Committee recommended the City Council transfer $25,000 for a second year of the Public Service Internship Program.

Last year the program served 15 college students and will be funded enough this year to employ 20 students.

"It was a great success. We are hoping to do the same thing this year," said Mayor Arthur Vigeant at the meeting of the committee Monday.

The mayor said he plans to advertise the positions in the next few weeks. He will be looking to fill positions from different departments in the city rather than get interns and find positions for them.

"A lot of small projects were done in different offices," said the mayor of the program.

City Councilor Joseph Delano requested that more technically minded interns be hired on through the program.

"I thought it was a good program and we should do it again," he said. "I would love you to bring some technical folks on."

Finance Committee Chair Michael Ossing said he was in favor of the program and also ensuring that the use of the interns is made clear and they remain productive throughout the summer.

"The last thing I want to see is having an intern and them not being productive," he said to the mayor.

The committee unanymously recommended the money be transferred for the program.
