State Police Issue Travel Warning

The long periods of heavy rain on Monday have made traveling a hazardous proposition.

The Massachusetts State Police issued a travel warning Monday afternoon after responding to multiple vehicle crashes and spinouts throughout the state.

The hazardous driving conditions are a result of heavy rain that began Sunday night.

"Massachusetts State Police patrols have responded to numerous spin-outs today caused by motorists hitting puddles and slick areas, especially in left lanes of roadways," said a release. "State Police urge motorists to drive slowly in rainy conditions and leave extra space between themselves and the vehicle in front of them."

These treacherous conditions are likely to continue throughout the day, causing the National Weather Service to issue an advisory that includes the Marlborough area.

"Rainfall with embedded periods of heavy rain may result in some minor urban, small stream or poor-drainage flooding today," said a statement.

Early Monday afternoon, the heaviest rain bands were headed north from southeastern Massachusetts.

"Rain … is expected to continue across the advisory area during this afternoon," continued the NWS release. "Rainfall rates of up to an inch per hour are expected. The rain is expected to produce ponding of water in low lying and poor drainage  areas, especially in urban areas…"

To avoid dangerous situations stay off the roads and highways as possible, but otherwise follow these instructions.

"State Police also remind motorists that they are required to keep to the right or center travel lanes, and reserve the left lane only for passing where allowed," said the release. "Motorists should take caution when passing."
