UPDATED: MPS Start Postponed to Sept. 6; AMSA, Assabet to Begin Tuesday

Superintendent Anthony Pope announced the delay Monday afternoon in an email to parents. AMSA will greet 6th and 7th grade on Tuesday; the rest begin Wednesday, Aug. 31.

With thousands of customers still without power across the city, Marlborough's Anthony Pope has announced that the first day of the 2011/12 school has been postponed until Tuesday, Sept. 6.

"I hope that you survived Hurricane Irene and that you are safe," began Pope in an email to parents. "I have been in regular communications with the who are monitoring the after-storm damage and working to re-establish services as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the power outages remain widespread and will take some time to fix. There still are a significant number of people in the city without power. Because of this, we are moving the start of school for students to Tuesday, Sept. 6."

Marlborough Patch was told by a reader Monday evening that the  will begin classes Tuesday, Aug. 30 for the 6th and 7th graders, and the remaining grades (8 through 12) need to report Wednesday morning, Aug. 31.

will begin Tuesday, Aug. 30 for all incoming freshman, according to a post on their website. All other students will begin Thursday, Sept. 1.

The open house at the (currently home to the city's ), , and (schools) will be Thursday, Sept. 1. Whitcomb's open house event will begin at 1 p.m. and the elementary schools' events will be at 2:15 p.m., said the email.

Friday Marlborough schools are closed, and Monday is the Labor Day holiday.

“The circumstances of the past few days have been very unusual, and everyone’s safety has been and continues to be most important in our decision-making processes,” said Pope. “We believe that delaying the start of school a few days will give families more of a chance to recover from the storm and allow them to be better prepared to start the new school year.”
