The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Tuesday afternoon warning of strong, scattered thunderstorms across the region.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Tuesday afternoon warning of possible scattered thunderstorms with hail in western and central Massachusetts. 

"Scattered showers and thunderstorms have formed across southern Vermont and southern New Hampshire as of mid-afternoon. More showers and thunderstorms will develop along and north of the Mass Pike and possibly into Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts through this evening," said the statement. "Some of the storms may produce hail and strong wind gusts in addition to frequent lightening and brief downpours. Stronger storms are most likely Keene and Worcester and to Boston and Manchester."

As of approximately 5:30 p.m. skies in Marlborough were overcast with occasional distant rumblings of thunder.

"Those with outdoor plans should be ready to head inside if thunderstorms approach. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning," warned the release.
