Candidate Vigeant Stands on His Record as Election Approaches

Mayoral preliminary elections will be held October 4.

Leading up to election day, Marlborough Patch will publish a series of interviews with each of the three candidates running in the preliminary mayoral elections to be held October 4.

Republican mayoral candidate Arthur Vigeant is a lifelong resident of Marlborough and a certified public accountant with offices located downtown. He has been on the City Council for 18 years, nine of which have been as president of the council.

Referencing accomplishments during his time on the council, Vigeant noted, "I established the City Scholarship Fund to assist graduating high school seniors go to college. The fund, composed entirely of volunteer donations, has given more than $50,000 in scholarships. I was one of the founders of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC)," in addition to prompting the development of 81 affordable senior housing units.

In addition to his City Council commitment, Vigeant was a member of the City Retirement Board for five years. He was the past treasurer and is a current member of the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Upon questioning his decision to run for mayor, Vigeant responded, "I think we have a well-run city. It's been recognized by Bloomberg BusinessWeek as the best place in Massachusetts to raise a kid. I've been a part of those accomplishments and want to be the leader to bring this city forward in continuing those plans."

If elected mayor, Vigeant claims his top priority will be the school system. "The schools are well-funded, but (we) just need to spend the money appropriately for vast improvements on the school system. The superintendent and school committee are doing a good job. I will stand behind them to make sure their goals get accomplished," said Vigeant.

"Attracting and maintaining jobs and businesses in Marlborough is crucial, which is why I was one of founders of MEDC. I have reached out to businesses wanting to expand within the city and reached out to bring new ones to Marlborough," Vigeant noted. He also listed the treatment plant commitment, Memorial Beach, parks and recreation, and focusing on the construction of a new library and senior center as priorities.

"I think the city government obviously runs different from the private sector. I have experience in both and understand the differences. I can get the needed projects moving and finalized and will hold the city to same fiscal discipline that we've had for the last 15 years, " Vigeant concluded.
